Show me your head unit

So now back to Crutchfield this morning and ordered an new Jensen double din. This will be going in on thursday.

Don't care about Apple carplay, Android auto or Waze (AC/AA)? Just saying... that unit does not support AC/AA

Never thought I hear myself say it but I can't do without AC/AA mainly because (with Waze installed), calls out all the cops on the roadside, accidents, traffic jams, radars, red light & speed cameras.

Using Apple Carplay & waze together has saved me too many fines to mention and I don't even drive around intentionally breaking traffic laws, these days it's more like entrapment with all these high tec detection systems in place you need to have technologies to combat it.

I'm using a Sony MEX-M100BT. Main feature I like is that it is 40 watts / channel RMS, so I don't have to run an additional amplifier with it. It's also marine rated, so no worries if there is a shower with the top down.

I'm not a fan of the double din in a jeep either. I think it would be very difficult to see in direct sunlight when the top was down.

Got it installed and have to say that I'm pretty impressed. Had planned on doing the speakers as well but this has made an amazing difference. I may not bother with speakers after hearing how good this sounded going down the road.
Bright display, easy to see in bright sun.

See....i did the opposite. I did all the kicker speakers and the factory sub in center console.........NOW tonight is when the head unit is going in. Although it is as hot as Africa here in New Jersey. I will post pictures later!

Can you guys tell me - Can I buy a standard 4 channel head unit and a metra wiring harness/dash adapter and use the head unit for my TJ which has the factory sub also? I thought mine was like a 7 speaker system from the factory but I haven’t done much looking into it.

I ordered from crutchfield. Made it about as easy as can be. Paid the extra cash and they made a connecting harness. Just plug it in to your head unit and your existing factory harness. No muss, no fuss.

Yup... it's amazing what a clean amp can do for the existing speakers. That said, I took the one step at a time approach and just did the head unit first. I got similar "wow" results. After a couple months I swapped out the speakers all around and got even bigger "wow" results. I went with some more expensive speakers that have a high sensitivity and now I'm amazed at the total system upgrade.

Works with factory sub also?

The factory sub out is in the jeep's stock harness. Depending on the head unit it should be a direct connection between the unit's head unit and the jeeps. I connected an Alpine and it couldn't be easier. I connected the harnesses together myself. It took an hour of soldering and shrink wrap but Crutchfield gives you the color coding of the wires in an install manual. They will also solder up the harness for your for a little extra (cost depends on the head unit).

very cool. I used to be a car audio junkie and I’ve installed tons of systems (15-20 yrs ago) and sometimes there were additional steps or parts needed for factory systems with more than 4 speakers, and sometimes there wasn’t. That’s why I was inquiring.

Yes it worked with the factory sub, I called and talked to a tech at crutchfield-they make it as easy as it can be.
Took about 90 minutes to install but that also included adding a sirius reciever/antennae and routing the microphone along the roll bar.

Same. I bought it because it was the only one that I could find with an actual volume knob rather than having to look at the touch screen while changing volume. It is possessed at times and has been known to play U2 songs when I turn the Jeep on. I deleted all the U2 songs from my phone but it still happens.

One of the reasons I bought my Alpine was that anytime you put 2 fingers on the screen at the same and swipe up the volume goes up... down and it goes down. To the right and it skips to the next song and to the left and it replays. No need to look to do that either.

For guys that just want bluetooth look in a FM transmitter. They work fine and can make any radio bluetooth for cheap.
