About to Bypass Neutral Safety Switch

I’m thinking about bypassing the neutral safety switch (NSS) permanently and wanted to see if anyone has perspective to add. Went out to turn on the Jeep and with the key in the Start position the only thing that happened was the Brake light came on. Battery is good, starter is good, neutral safety switch is showing continuity when in Park and Neutral, and ignition switch is new-ish. I have currently bypassed the NSS by hooking up a wire to my starter and then touching the other end to the positive post on the battery to get it started (quick and dirty). I’ve worked a majority of the weekend on this and cannot think of anything else to check. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have never understood why American vehicles - and some Japanese - insist on having them in the 1st place. I've moved more than one vehicle with the starter motor in an emergency...

I had a front driveshaft get a bow in it under stress and it came around and wiped the NSS off the side of the transmission. I plugged the hole by filling the dead switch up with RTV and moved the NSS to the dash so I have to hold a momentary switch down to start it. Otherwise it will start in any gear and while that doesn't seem like a bad thing, I had experience to the contrary.

I swapped an AW-4 into an 05 and the NSS circuit wasn't as easy as the earlier ones. I took the easy route and bypassed it with the owner's permission. While I still had it, I hopped into the seat with both legs out the door. Needed to check something so I reached over and started it while forgetting two things, it will start in any gear and it was in drive. There was another rig right in front of it and I barely got a leg in and my foot on the brake to get it stopped before I crashed in the driveway.

I hooked up the NSS properly after that. You may be smarter than I am so you don't have to hook it up to a switch.

I had my fuse pulled or inserted, don't remember which way it goes, so I could start mine without pushing the clutch for years. Very handy for reaching across or in through the window to get things cooling down or heating up without having to jump in. I always leave my manual transmission cars in neutral with the parking brake on, and always wiggle the stick back and forth to check before I start. Picked it up one day from a shop, strapped the kids on the back from the pax side, then reached over and started it. The shop guy had left it in gear and cocked the wheel to the left. It sideswiped a minivan parked next to it before it got turned off. Then I thought of all the times it's parked in the garage with the kids climbing around in it while I'm working on it. They think the roll cage is a jungle gym. I considered if they got the keys somehow and started playing "drive the car." Decided I didn't want my Jeep in my living room and that safety feature is now always engaged.

That doesn’t sound like the NSS is your problem.

Sometimes I need to start mine to get the OBA or OBS going, I just reach in with one hand and push in the clutch and the other turn the key. No need to jump in

Tell you why I wouldnt disable the NNS
a friend years ago disabled the NSS on his Cherokee and also had a remote start . Some how he had it in gear when his girlfriend decided to warm up his car on a cold morning via the remote.......... the jeep lunged into the her Firebird parked in front of the XJ....

If you ever, just even once, leave the Jeep in gear when you park it, or especially if anyone else may ever drive it, I would leave it hooked up. I'm not a believer in all the safety mandated crap on vehicles today, but that is one I feel is of real value. The number of times I've had young family members check out our tractors and other motorized equipment and play with the steering wheel, pretend to play racecar driver and such I've seen them too often play with the keys and every other button and switch. Neighbor lost a grandchild when the little guy accidentally started a farm truck and went across the field and down a ravine. Don't ever want to attend another 5 year old's funeral again. Leave that safety switch in, or do what Blaine did at least.

I always, always, always leave all vehicles in gear - and set the parking brake. I also take the keys with me, I never, never, never leave the keys in a vehicle - not even momentarily. Americans don't seem to like to use parking brakes either. But I see no need whatsoever for a clutch switch. I've owned/driven plenty of vehicles that did NOT have one - Americans and their interlocks...

With the Rubi I have shifted temporarily into 4L then start the engine without clutch. I think that safety for a manual is important but I like that it can be defeated with the fuse or by using 4L on a Rubicon.

What I can start my Rubi in 4L w/o pushing in the clutch, I have never tried but I will

Yep! I learned that here. It was handy getting the Jeep in and out of the garage when I had the seats out. Started in 1st gear/rev and 4LO, turned the ignition off when it got to where I wanted. I was pretty nervous the first time, did not want to drive through the back wall of the garage.. It did actually go a little faster than I was thinking in 1st gear and 4LO.
