I'm the proud owner of a TJ. My younger brother has decided he wants an XJ. Im heading out to look at a few this afternoon. Im pretty familiar with common problems with the TJ, but not as familiar with the XJ. Any input / wisdom would be appreciated.

I have a 91 XJ, runs great 220,000 miles. Similar to the TJ with the i6. Biggest difference is it’s a unibody.

Check the floorboards for rust. XJ's have issues with water leaks from the cowl which can run down the firewall and pool on the floor. The unibody can twist if wheeled hard or from an accident. Door hinges tend to sag but can be replaced. The mechanical issues are pretty much the same as the TJ.

There are several YouTube videos that do a pretty good job of addressing what to look for when buying an XJ. As mentioned floor board rust and the area under the rear seats (easy to lift and check out) are the main things to look for. My guess is that that won't be a big issue in your area.

Another thing is the year. Early ones with the V6 engines aren't as popular (or available). The RENIX era runs from '87 to '90 and is concern to some people but sought after by others. '97 is the year that the body styling changed. I think it's the '99 or '00 that has a bit of a cylinder head issue. There are a lot of differences from year to year but they're all mostly good.

‘89 and ‘90 models still used AMC high nickel blocks, so can take a lot of miles before wearing. Bar pin bolts on rear shocks. Front end is same as TJ.

Thanks for your replies, guys. The search continues. It's always interesting to see what "good condition" means to some dealers.
