Who in here likes to hunt?

Planning on taking the boy to a conservation area on Friday where they release Pheasant roosters on weekly schedule. Not exactly "sporting" because massive flocks fly right over your head, but the kid hasn't ever seen anything harvested & cleaned. He's excited, hopefully we'll have a nice post-Thanksgiving meal out of it.
This is a good way to do it. Have some fun and successs and build from there. I’ve done those type pheasant hunts and they are a blast. Lots of opportunity.

Deer Season In Iowa is trucking along nicely.

My oldest scored with his bow using his youth season tag:

And I scored on my #1 target with my bow a few days ago:

Oldest is still holding his regular season bow tag, and we have the gun seasons in front of us.
Wow!!! Incredible bucks. I hunted 5 full days during rifle season and saw 1buck for a split second but couldn't get it done. Meatless in Seattle this year.

This season has been rough, the weather has really suppressed day movement. I'm used to seeing at least 5 deer per sit, now I see them right before daylight or right after sunset. I've taken one buck so far, my freezer is thin.

I don't often shoot bucks, but this year we had a few mature bucks and I just wanted to take one. None were massive and he wasn't the biggest one I'd seen while scouting, but after seeing spikes and does repeatedly, thinking I was gonna get skunked, he walked out following a very young doe and a shot through his lungs and part of his heart, made for some easy tracking.

I mainly just go for meat and to get outdoors, but I do like seeing nice antler growth on 200+lb critters. We don't leave much meat leftover either. Even started adding the tongue and neck to the menu. He's twice the size of the young doe (fawn) I took last year.

.223?

Nice deer

.308 Winchester with a 125gn Gameking. I recovered the bullet, it expanded and held together and did A LOT of damage. I don't remember the velocities I measured from that 18" barrel.

I've used .223 in the past and it's not preferred IMO. Just didn't seem to be as forgiving as the .308 caliber stuff. Thought about .300 BO, but haven't done it.

thats a great setup! I'm building a 308 pistol right now to be my brushy woods gun. I have used a 120gr Barnes out of my bolt action 308 it was moving mag velocities and was an absolute deer slayer.

Figured it was more just looked like a thin barrel. Gotta be a fun gun.

It's the Keltec RFB and that's a suppressor I stole from my .338 Lapua, so it makes stuff look small around it. It's a neat rifle. Feels weird with the plastic furniture and stuff, but it's pretty good. Not used to the adjustable gas system.

Can you not hunt there with rifle cartridges?
Not if they are necked down. So, 350 legend, 450 Bushmaster, etc are legal to hunt with, where I am. If I go north, "real" rifle cartridges are legal. We have a state highway that divides the state north and south. If you are south of that road, you're in the "restricted firearm" zone. North of the line, anything larger that 22 cal is legal (no 223).

Basically, it's a population density thing. All of our big cities are south of the highway they use as the divider. However, they have not re-evaluated in so long, it doesn't make sense anymore. I really think they need to do it county by county...

Understood. Minnesota is similar. I can hunt coyotes, in the dark, anywhere with whatever I want but can’t do the same for deer. Never been a fan of those rules.

I thought a buddy from up north said it's recent that you all even got the opportunity to use pretty much anything but a shotgun, maybe I'm mistaken.

In KY we're not too restricted and I absolutely love our KY fish and wildlife and conservation officers but there's still stuff that just doesn't make sense, but it's only slightly picky on my part. I just think poorly worded laws should be replaced with stuff that makes more sense. I don't like buying special magazines and stuff and I think laws should be specific on what they actually are trying to do rather than just making stuff easy for law enforcement. I whole heartedly support law enforcement but sometimes stuff shouldn't be easy when it comes to losing the spirit of laws.

Same. Small game rules are different than large game rules, including the firearm. Stupid.

That's true. Only about 5 years ago did they start allowing anything but shotguns. Funny thing is, I have a "shotgun" that has almost the range, and is almost as accurate, as my 450. It's got a rifled barrel to shoot sabots, cantilevered score mount, 3x9 leupold scope...

The MI DNR is kind of a joke...

What about pistols in the shotgun zone? Here that allows many rifle cartridges in the AR pistol form.

Yes, most pistols are OK. Muzzleloaders too. Its not a "shotgun only" zone as much as a no high powered rifle zone.

As far as using something like a 300 BO or 223 in a pistol AR...that might be sketchy. I'm not sure I'd want to take that risk, and I've not looked into it at all. In that case, even if you are "right," the CO might not think so, and will still confiscate your weapon and levy a fine, best case. I'm happy enough with my 450. I'd much prefer my bolt action 30-06, but the 450 does the job.

I was thinking more of 6.5 Grendel in AR15 or go to AR10 in .308 or 6.5 creedmoor.
