The record companies realized about 20yrs ago that us old farts sitting around the gas station listening to the Hag didn't spend our money on music and concert tickets , so they decided to appeal to the younger generation and tap that revenue. That meant all the artist had to be prettier and the music had to be more pop. Doesn't matter what you saying as long as it rhymes.
The industry knew that 60-70 years ago. Simplicity sells. The stuff we laud as the "good music" from a certain time is just the stuff that stood the test of time, but still well within the realm of popular culture. If you dig deeper there is all kinds of interesting music that was never well known in its day outside of a few enthusiasts both then and now.
