The beginning of the end for the Cherokee nameplate

Your opinion doesn't align with reality. The vast majority of vehicle models are named not numbered.

If you tell most guys you drive a TJ (or any other), they're going to say "a what?".
Of course they wont know NOW because that is how they are marketed.

But plenty of automakers use Alphanumeric model numbers - All the for trucks aside from the Ranger, BMW's entire lineup, Mazda, Mercedes, Tesla , etc etc.

I'd wager it's probably 50/50 names vs number codes.

It wouldn't be confusing at all had they kept the _ J naming convention from jump.

I've mentioned this before but in Canada we didn't get "Wranglers" until the JK came out. I don't call my TJ or LJ a Wrangler but I probably should. You're right, non Jeep people generally don't know what a TJ or what a YJ is and definitely not what the differences are. I may as well say I drive a nicer looking Army Jeep. If you say Cherokee or even Comanche you usually get a positive response. If those vehicle names didn't exist and a company proposed them for a new product today they'd get crucified. I imagine "Comanche" was considered when the new Gladiator came out but it didn't take long to dismiss it.

+1 for alpha-numeric model designations. Of course, Mercedes screwed the pooch on the idea in recent years, their numbers don't mean what they used to mean - thanx mostly to Toyota, er Lexus. But a Chevy truck is a C10/20/30, not a "Silverado" which is a trim level. "Wrangler" is the dumbest name ever, to me its a "Jeep" or a "TJ".

Good lord, this cancel culture bullshit is ridiculous.

Indian Motorcycles, are they next? 🤦🏻

No kidding! Sports team have been under fire for a long time and are now changing their names, many pro teams because of sponsorship problems (Redskins, Indians, Eskimos, etc). Our minor hockey club just changed from Redmen to Renegades. Funny thing is that the original 80 yr. name was based on the colour of their sweater. Renegades sounds more politically incorrect.

I've been involved in Lacrosse for most of my life (almost 6 decades). Because of its native heritage there are many Indian based club names (Indians, Chiefs, Mohawks, Warriors, Braves, Arrows, Warriors, Senacas, Redmen, Redbirds, Thunderhawks, etc.). The team I last played for became the Tomahawks FFS! I always laugh at the free pass we get while other clubs are beating themselves up over a problem that shouldn't exist.

Silverado is the model name. LT, RST, LTZ and High Country are the trim levels.
Not in my world. Switching Silverado to a model name was just stupid. My father purchased a new, 1978 C30 with the Silverado trim. I myself purchased a new 1986 C10 with the Silverado trim, although at that point I probably should have gotten the step down trim level whose name I've long forgotten.

Do you think PETA is gonna try and get the Bronco name banned?

I'm like Elizabeth Warren level Cherokee, but I do think it's cool to have some of that heritage and I think all this name banning is just going to end up with erasing the past, the good and the bad. Some people need to put on their big boy pants. I would think the bigger issue would be having a spokesperson that probably can't legally use your product on the road.

The new Jeep Cherokees though are kind of insulting to SUVs, but there are only a handful of SUVs that are actually anywhere in the vicinity of a SUV. Why can't we just call them mini-vans? We all know what they really are...

Not to put too fine a point on it but the Tsalagi people might have had a point if that were the name on the side of the Jeep. It doesn't, so they don't.

Ah man no more Cherokee's, that's terrible.

How about they rename it the Chero-CAR. Since that's all it is anyway.

That's too bad, especially since most folks don't think of the Indian tribe when someone mentions "Jeep Cherokee"

So why don't we call everything "stuff" or "thing" so no one could be offended. Kinda like there's no he or she, and all the old ways of identifying items are offensive. Nothing will have a label, or numbers or letters to separate it from anything else. You know, since everything is equal, nothing is different, and all things are gender binary.

The world gets more stupid by the minute!
