In need of some storage and setup suggestions from members that camp and overland

I forgot to mention a spare tire bag.

A Trasharoo is great for trash, but I've never liked the saggy diaper look and they don't stand up to UV light. Also, they are no longer made in the U.S.A. and are now sourced from China.

I use a Blue Ridge Overland Gear "XL Tire Bag." It is made from the same tough stuff as truck covers and has many features Trasharoos don't have such as exterior mesh pockets and the ability to cinch the bag tight so the stuff inside doesn't shift or settle. In addition to a trash bag, I keep a small shovel, canvas bucket and related items inside. A bit pricey, but worth the cost in my estimation.

Tire bags can actually hold quite a bit of camping gear! That one fits nice and high so its worth spending a bit extra for OCD lol

Just started my overlanding trailer build for this very reason. Not enough space in the Jeep for me my wife, all of her “necessities “ and the dog. I had an old military M-100 trailer but sold it so I could custom build a fully Enclosed trailer with a roof to tent mounted to it.

Same as @Fishtaco I've got a hitch mounted cargo carrier. Would prefer a roof rack for difficult terrain leading to camp-site as the hitch cargo carrier reduces your departure angle, but have never really struggled. I will get to the camp-site, ditch the cargo carrier and then on to more difficult terrain.

Here it is helping me move houses lol.

Wouldn't put too much weight on it, I just load it with bulky items (swag, gazebo), bad angle but you get the idea.

You said your dogs take up the back seat but maybe they could sit on top of this Hooke Road Wrangler TJ Interior Cargo Basket Rack Solid Steel Luggage Storage Carrier with Elastic Rope Net Compatible with Jeep Wrangler TJ 1997-2006 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZRKY4ND/?tag=wranglerorg-20
Unavailable right now but this is what I use and I love it. Sturdy easy to take out and holds everything I need. I also just run a smittybuilt roof rack with a waterproof gun case on top that a attached to the rack. All my camping gear goes in the box. Cooler and kitchen stuff under the shelf and my clothes and backpack on top.

I've got the same problem, my dog takes up to much space. There's barely enough room for my sub and my dog. If I'm going for the day I use a receiver hitch it's kind of a pain though getting the dog in. But if I'm going overnight I bring my rooftop tent trailer.

The older you get the more shit you need to take! last camping trip my wife took her hairdryer and curling tongs ????? Not so TJ friendly in the cargo space debate! Her that is not the appliances :) lol

I would give that a try if I could find one! I did try a DIY like this before but didn't like the way it came out. I may have to try something again

It's already a pain getting the dogs in and out of the lifted Jeep, the seats don't tumble forward far enough. I thought about the hitch setup but worry about wheeling with it. Some of the campsite trips I have planned it would be fine for, but some of the trips will be wheeling all day and finding a spot to camp.

That's my problem as well I always have to have a base camp before we go wheeling with the rack on. Here on the planes of Montana you have to go a long drive to get to the mountains but I can drive and be in 9 different mountain wilderness in 1.5 hours. You are right about the older you get, you have to much shit!

I had finally decided on ordering the Garvin expedition rack. I was looking through the install instructions and @Steel City 06 pictures when I realized I am going to have some interference issues with my MorRyde tailgate reinforcement kit.

Looks like the Garvin Adventure rack has the same mounting point right above the tail light. I guess this brings me back to the Gobi. My only concern about the Gobi rack is that the basket is much smaller from what I have read, so less storage space up top. That and lead times are 14 weeks out.

I wonder if you could jury rig a substitute bracket there. That bracket doesn't carry weight; it's there to provide rigidity to the rack. Without it the rack could rack forward or sideways under braking or high turning forces. So it would have to resist pulling forces in four directions, but not downward force from weight.

Too bad you can't just extend the MoRyde C channel already bolted to the tub to connect to the rack. How hard would it be to uninstall and weld on an extension?

I was thinking that, and trying to picture, but I would also hate to have to rig something to a brand new $1500 rack

I had the same problem with my tire carrier...just omitted that attachment point...plenty strong with no movement with all other points attached..

Depends on how big your dogs are but I built this for our two Jacks. Made it high enough for coolers underneath and the dogs ride on top. It has a padded top now but this is what the design looks like. I think it was Pro Comp that has this and I copied and modified for my own needs.

That looks awesome! Do you have a thread going on that one?

For storage, first look at the interior for most of the small stuff. Here is a good thread by jscherb.
There is lots of room for storage, and probably using items you already have. I overland/camp/kayak a lot, 3 days max (typically). The rear seat takes up a lot of usable space so I leave it home, and when I have the dog with me, I pack as much as possible in soft sided bags and backpacks and I put it in with an open space for the dog on the drinker's side so he can put his face in the wind. He can usually get comfortable laying on the stuff. If not-oh well. He's a dog. I strap it all in with a combo of bungees and cargo nets. I also strap as much as possible to the roll bars and even the sound bar (typically where the paper products and bread is stored). I don't have any cargo racks at all-kayak is on the roof tied to the F & R bumpers, top-up so I can keep the tent, spare boots, and towels inside. On the 2 times I have stayed out for more than 3 days, I removed the passenger seat for additional storage. For fires, I scavenge for local wood or purchase some locally so as not to bring any pests.

Anyway-some alternative views on packing, storage, and racks. I use smittybuilt nets around the rollbars to keep the big smelly dog from jumping out of the cab.

How do you get that out? I built a simple shelf full width that fits lower in the hardtop channels for lighter gear, its narrower than this because of seatbelts/roll bar but wider
