So my 2000 Tj throw a code of PO740

It's a torque converter error. Check the fluid first ... With the parking brake set, with the engine running and warmed up, shift through all the gears and leave the shifter in Neutral to check the ATF level.

Your 32RH has a connector at the rear that engages its torque converter. Is it connected?

Well the main problem we can't figure out is it doesn't go into first. If you hit the gas it's real sluggish moving until it's in second gear. As far as that connector I would hope so but will ask hubby.

I know the fluid is fine we just put this trans in. And put new fluid it. Drove okay for a day except for not going into first. Then check engine light came on and that's when I got that code

Oh that's a little different now. Have you verified its ATF level is where it should be? To check your 32RH's ATF level correctly, the transmission must be in Neutral (not Park!) and the engine must be running during the ATF level check.

And it was filled with ATF+4??? If the bottle didn't say "ATF+4" in big letters on the front, it was the wrong ATF. No other ATF is correct, even Mobil-1 ATF is the wrong stuff.

Its a 30RH. 4cyl. It will go into 1st manually then will shift auto while u accelerate if you put into drive but won't go back to 1st. In drive when you stop
The trans fluid is castrol high milies

Castrol high miles ATF+4? If it doesn't say ATF+4 on the front label, it's not the right stuff. I already know it doesn't say ATF+4 on the front label, Castrol doesn't make a high mileage ATF+4, thought they do make a good quality ATF+4.

Transmissions will not shift correctly when filled with the wrong type of ATF. Castrol High Mileage ATF claims it is ATF+3 compatible as well as claiming it compatible with virtually all ATFs but in the 30RH or 32RH, I personally would ONLY run an ATF that said ATF+4 in big letters on the front label.

And the ATF level was checked as described above? If the transmission gear sector is not in Neutral and if the engine is not running during the level check, you won't get an accurate ATF level on the dipstick.

Not the right stuff and will cause shifting problems, maybe not yours, but it's hard to assist with troubleshooting with the wrong fluid in it.

Here's the problem, now you have a torque converter filled with the wrong fluid and you need to get it ALL out. A simple fluid change will not be sufficient.
