Wheel Wobble Question

I would swap front to back to eliminate a bad wheel. The steering linkage could possibly transfer the wobble from one side to the other.

I will try that soon. Might get another balance too.... I drove it for about 10 miles yesterday evening, and about miles this morning and didn't feel any vibes. No clue why it happens sometimes and other times it doesn't.

Bumping this back up to the top to get some fresh eyes/ideas on it. I've driven it quite a bit over the last few days as the weather has been nice - wobble/shimmy is definitely still there after the Timken hub assembly. Still can only feel it at 50-60mph, eventually smooths out from slowing down or speeding up (but sometimes I can see the wheel shimmying side-to-side even at slower speeds down around 25-30mph, just can't feel it). I also tried to go back in and tighten up the trackbar bolt just to be certain, and it's as tight as I could get it.... There's not any one particular cause that sets it off.

I didn't notice this before I got my BFG KO2s and steel rims. It had some miserable MT Baja Claws and alloy rims when I bought it, so it could've just been a rougher ride didn't allow me to notice it. I've gone through 2 balances, replaced a bent wheel (per the tire shop during one of my balancing appts), and gone through multiple tire rotations, and the issue has stayed in the front/driver's side, so I've eliminated a bent wheel.

I've read that steel rims can have their own sets of issues aside from easily being bent. Could something with the steel rims (besides a bent rim) have anything to do with this. Seems unlikely since it's stayed through all of my rotations, but I'm open to anything at this point.

I have a very similar issue, I’m thinking mine is because of unbalanced wheels based on what I’ve seen. I’m getting new wheels in a few weeks so Im waiting until then. I have seen someone on here say that they needed to have their wheels balanced like 3-4 times before they finally got it right, maybe they weren’t properly balanced?

Keep me posted on what the new wheels do for you, please.

It wouldn’t hurt to for me to have mine balanced again. I guess I don’t really understand why an unbalanced wheel would affect the same spot on the vehicle every time - even after it’s been swapped to the back. The issue is always in my drivers side front, regardless on where I move the wheels on my TJ.

Could what I’m feeling be related to drive-line vibrations? Just grasping at straws, but I have no clue hat drive-line vibes feel like. It doesn’t always go away when I engage the clutch, so I have stayed away the drive-line thought.

Ran down the highway at 75 today a few times. Didn’t feel the vibes until I started slowing down on the exit ramp. And also on a background around 55mph for a few seconds.

I’m narrowing this down more, and I’m thinking it has something to do with the front driveshaft. My wife was riding with me today, and she said that the passenger side appeared to be wobbling a bit as well.

I rotated all 4 tires today (again) and it didn’t solve the problem.

I guess the next step would be to disconnect the front driveshaft and see what happens.... Do I just pull the driveshaft completely out and then drive it?

You can just remove the 4 bolts on each side of the driveshaft and drive it. I had a lot of trouble getting to the bolts on my transfer case end, I had to drop my skid because I was not able to get enough leverage on it to get the bolts off but I'm sure it's possible

Also some people make marks to make sure it gets lined up the same way going back on, not sure how important this is however

4 bolts total on the front uJoint. As long as you can tie it up safely, you won't need to remove it completely. Yes, you should mark it to put it back in the same orientation as it was.

The front DS will cause vibes, but shouldn't be causing the wheels to wobble.

I’m going to try one more thing before I jump to the driveshaft. When I upgraded my front CA’s, I didn’t have a torque wrench. I have one now, so I’m going to go back and make sure all of the CA bolts are torqued properly.... I’ve been speaking to an acquaintance who is a mechanic (at a large car dealership) and the first thing he asked, after I told him it wasn’t a balance/bent rim issue, was if my control arms were still good.

Whether or not the CA’s are the problem, I have no clue, but I doubt I torqued them down correctly. Fingers crossed it’s the culprit, but at this point I just assume anything I try won’t fix it.

Still chasing down this slight wobble..... Do you guys see anything in this video that jumps out at you? It’s not the best video (I’ll do another one later). EDIT - I checked my trackbar bushings and it seems fine, but could be replaced. The drag link bushing on the wheel-side is shot. I tried to re-grease the drag-link bushing on the wheel-side, and the boot has a hole in it so the grease just runs out. The trackbar bushing took grease, but it’s not in great shape.

I’ve got a new stock pitman arm, and I’m going to order a new trackbar and drag-link today and replace that all at once.

After months and months of random upgrades/replacements chasing a drivers side wheel wobble issue, I’ve finally conquered the issue.

After going back to a stock pitman arm, my wobble continued, so as a last ditch effort to solve the issue, I found a fellow TJ owner with the same size wheels/tires as my jeep. He let me put one of his wheels on my TJ to see if maybe his alloy wheels helped. I put his wheel on, and there was no wobble! I put mine back on, right back to wobbling. With that info in-hand, I purchased a new set of alloy wheels and had them installed today. The wobble is gone.

Im not sure if my steel wheels were bad, or if the extra weight was just exacerbating some deeper issue, but regardless, my wobble is gone. I still find it odd that my wobble was only one the drivers side front, and that all 4 of my wheels did the exact same thing when they were rotated to that location. Lesson learned on going the cheap route.

Hope this info helps someone in the future! Thanks for all of the replies and info along the way.

Was just reading through this and was going to ask if you were sure both fronts weren't wobbling. My 04 did same thing when I first got it between 40-50. I changed wheels and it's gone.

I had the fellow jeep owner drive it while I rode in the passenger seat, and he said the driver side was wobbling but I couldn’t see any wobble on the passenger side at the same time.
