Using Double-Din Space with Single-Din Head Unit in the TJ's 1.5-Din Location ...

Hi all,

So, our TJs come with 1.5-din head units. Some of us install single-din aftermarket units with dash kits like this. Some of us get the Metra double-din kit and install double-din units. I'm interested in using that same double-din metra kit, but then putting in a single-din head unit, so that I can have more storage space underneath the head unit. Something like this, where the storage pocket is bigger because you're using the full double-din worth of space.

But that last link is for a Patriot, I think, not a TJ. Anyone know of a way to do this? I want to maximize the storage space I have below the single-din head unit.
 
@Zorba . I know this isn't exactly what you did, but I'm wondering if you have any advice on finding a kit that would accept a single-din, but then give me a full single-din worth of storage below it, using up the whole double-din space. (I know double-din isn't really 2x single din, but you get the idea.)
 
You'd just need to find/fab a "pocket" to go with your single DIN radio. Dunno if anybody makes one pre-made or not...

Thanks. If you know where I can find one, I'm interested. So far, the only ones I can find have a thin pocket since they are designed for the 1.5-din space. The only ones I can find that make use of the full double-din space are for other Jeeps, Volvos, etc.

Edit: However, as @Zorba learned in another thread, double-din is not really 2X single-din. So actually I doubt that a single-din pocket could fit below my single-din unit in the double-din space that the metra dash kit provides.

It will if you do enough Dremeling - BUT - don't forget that the top single DIN unit is going to want to overlap the bottom one. Double DIN is narrower than single too.
