Gear shifter slipping out of gear after transfer case drop

Your shifter isn't adjusted properly to be able to pull it completely into 4Lo, that's why it's slipping out. Body lifts and tcase drops can both affect that. Adjust the linkage by loosening this bolt, circled in red, adjusting the rod so it can pull the tcase all the way into 4Lo, then tighten the snot out of that bolt so it can't slip out of that adjustment.

...and find a new shop. Dealing with that shifter during a lift is Jeep 101.

How much adjustment does the shift linkage have? Asking because I don't know, as I installed a cable shifter from the get-go. Can it be adjusted to accommodate the t-case drop + body lift that the OP has?

☝🏼This was a the answer. I’m not sure what your rust situation is but this is quote simple to do. A helper makes it nice.

Quite a bit. I’ve actually seen it adjust enough to accommodate a dreaded 3” body lift. Wasn’t mine, and we removed the 3” pucks for 1”. I currently have 1” BL and 1” ML and 4” springs. I still have the factory shift linkage that shifts great from 2H-4L but easily pops out of 4H. Needs a bit of fine tuning but I have new in box Savvy cable shifter (to replace my sons rusted factory unit), that I can use if needed.
Bottom line, it can be adjusted. 🤙🏼

So I'm doing this job right now. I've loosened bolt so its super loose, put shifter into 4lo (as far as it will go, so it's against the metal at the bottom)...pushed rod all the way forward and kept force on the rod while I tightened the bolt. Tried the gears while running...I am still having the problem, it wants to slip out of 4lo. What am I doing wrong?

Completely disconnect the shifter rod from the small transfer case shift lever on the side of the transfer case. Use a pair of pliers to manually and completely shift the transfer case into 4Lo. Drive around like that and see if it stays in 4Lo or pops out. If it still pops out the problem is inside the transfer. But if it stays in 4Lo you have a shift linkage issue.

ok thanks, will try that.

Oh I see whats happening... as the shifter handle is brought from 2H down to the 4Lo, the lever just below the shifter is gradually less able to exert any forward pushing force as its going past the angle that the lever can work (over centre?)... therefore as its pushed past neutral into 4lo, the leverage is actually going backwards instead of forward. Make sense? Wat do?

Just to clarify, my TJ has a 2 inch lift, plus 1 inch coil spacer AND a 1 inch body lift. I presume that why.

Yes that's why...

Cut cut cut...as in trim some areas where there is interference.

The getrag is a finicky sumbitch and has problems with jumping out of gear without any interference from the tunnel/console plastic area...

When it does get interference with that from lowering/body lifts etc...even in the slightest nit of interference...
All hell breaks loose with that tranny.

Matter of fact...i read your title and knew you had the getrag without even reading your statement of having the six speed.

They really are that notorious for being a such quirky s.o.b.

You appear to still be talking about his transmission. The problem he is still having, restated in post #18 above, is his transfer case that keeps jumping out of 4Lo. And what is a "getrag"? He has a standard 231 transfer case.

Thanks Jerry, I presume this adjustment is the same on '03 Rubi?

Yes, it is adjusted by loosening the bolt circled in red below that holds the shift rod in position. If you closely examine the shift rod you can probably see where it was originally being held by the bolt.
