GMRS Radio

Are you guys talking about "privacy" codes? As I explained before, CTCSS codes are the opposite of privacy. They make it so you can't hear anybody not transmitting on the same code, but everybody else can still hear you. They closer to anti-privacy codes. They are also used to open up repeaters of that's the way the repeater owner sets it up, and most are.

DCS privacy codes I believe

That is 100% the intended use and most people don't understand that. A lot of the GMRS guys that are wanna be or actual hams in addition to GMRS are always complaining about hearing non-radio-nerds talking about anything and everything clogging up their frequencies. They get especially perturbed by kids with "roger beeps." I tell them the low bar for everybody to use it (especially considering it's overlap/compatibility with FRS) is the main draw for most people to it and is why it's better than ham in practice for simply being able to, ya know, communicate with people you need to communicate with. If 99% of Jeepers or whatever group out there don't have a ham license, does it really matter if ham is in fact "better?"

If you don't want to hear all the kids on their Pokemon walkie talkies from Walmart with their roger beeps, use a CTCSS/DCS code and don't hear them. But what about finding random strangers to chat with on the radio you ask? That's not what GMRS/FRS was designed for and you should get a ham ticket.

Sorry for the slightly off topic rant.

Anyone that knows this knows they’re not privacy codes, but they filter out the extra noise of the channel. The phrasing is poor, but it’s commonly referred to that way :(

Motorola invented "Private Line" tones and its where "PL" comes from, as well as "privacy". Its also trademarked so the other manufacturers were forced to call it "Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System" or "CTCSS". Since most hams were using modified Motorola repeaters back in the day, the term "PL" stuck. These tones are actual analog tones transmitted on your signal that are so low in frequency and at such a low level its hard for the human ear to hear it (although some systems have their tones cranked way up). But, the machine can hear it and if it does will open the squelch so you can hear the person talking.

Later they came out with DIGITAL tones comprised of 1's and 0's and they call those Digital Coded Squelch or DCS. Its not really a "tone" like its analog counterpart, but a digital code that must be decoded.

The both do the same thing; they open your squelch circuit so you can hear only the people you want to hear. Same goes with the repeater. It only hears the people its programmed to hear, and those are the people who are transmitting that tone.

They STILL haven't lowered it to $35. I wonder if they'll get it done before new years. Guessing not.
You can still buy the radio and listen. Go on a few runs and see who actually uses their call sign like they are supposed to. If nobody is following the rules why pay some fee based on the rules? Pay for the licence when they drop the price if you feel like it, I wont tell if you don't.

my favorite comms youtuber, notarubicon, recently hinted that midland will soon introduce new gmrs radio(s?). anyone here know if midland finally will have radios to compete with wouxun?
