OK, A New Yorker here (don't hold it against me) Kind of considering retiring in TN in the next 5+ years and want to head down to kind of check it out. Anyone have suggestions for where to visit/look? I don't want to be in a city but certainly don't want to be in east bum-F____. Must have some civilization around. Any suggestions?

1.1 million for a 5 acre 5200 SQ' lake front home...not bad and taxes are under $3875!!!! I am over 4 times that now, this is Dandridge TN.. I might see a flight in my future.

I've lived most of my life in TN. Many Tennesseans will break the state into 3 regions (west, middle, and east)
I grew up in west TN which is very flat and largely agricultural. Memphis is the biggest city in this region. While Memphis has the best BBQ around I would not recommend moving there. Memphis is regularly one to the highest violent crime cities in the country.

I currently live in middle TN and I also went to college in this area. Nashville is the largest city and probably the top destinations for out of state visitors and relocators. Nashville is the easiest city to fly in and out.

I lived in east TN for about 7 years in Chattanooga. Chattanooga and Knoxville are the largest cities. IMO east TN is the most scenic parts of the state. I loved living in Chattanooga and even though you mentioned not wanting to live in the city I think Chattanooga would be a good size.

I would ideally like to be on a lake or river, need some space but do not need acres. Food shopping should be relatively close not an hour away. We will be heading down at some point to look/vacation, we are still a few years away.

x2. Aso...

Our football sucks but "Roll Tide" isn't too complicated to say so it's a good substitute.

We have the largest concentration of bachelorette's in the world. Do with that as you please

BBQ, Chicken & Mexican food are staples so come ready to eat.

We prefer you not to marry your sister but if that's your thing, it's fine, we would just prefer you to scoot over to Arkansas.

We generally don't understand what happens in Mississippi, Alabama & Georgia outside of football season so they are largely avoided most of the year.

We don't know where Louisiana is but we know that's where Mardi Gras takes place & hope to make it there one day.

The Carolinas are interesting but they are our first line of defense when we get invaded so we keep our distance.

We have pretty easy access to Florida's best beaches in the Destin/30A area, which rival anything the US has.

We don't talk to anyone North of us since they won the war & we tend to forget about anything heading West except for Texas

I'm in middle TN. It's a nice place and a bunch of people are moving here. North of Nashville construction has kept me working 7 days a week for a year. Personally I would go East TN, I'll be out there in 2 years myself. Also WindRock is in East TN so that's a plus.
