Not sure I want this promotion

Well folks, I finally have an update on this whole promotion thing.

As of today, I officially accepted their offer, and will transfer to dayshift on Sept. 1st, after having been a swingshift worker since Jan. 24th, 1984. I've filled-in for my boss for a total of four weeks within the past three months, while he has been burning up his vacation hours. By my doing so, it afforded me the opportunity to sort of "test drive" the position, as well as giving me a taste of the nasty-ass commute home (I refer to it as "traffuck"). I wake up at 3:00am, leave the house by 4:00am, and arrive at work by 5:00am. I found I can live with that. I leave work between 2:45pm (on a good day) and 3:30pm (on a shit day). My commute time had gone from 45 minutes (swingshift) to as much as an hour and forty-five minutes on a Friday afternoon. 🤬

So, why would I agree to take it? Because I had certain criteria that they would have to meet before I would even consider it ($$$), and not only did they meet it, they exceeded it. Substantially. At that point, knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel (I want to retire within the next five years), I just decided that I would take the plunge, and give it my best shot. I turned in my acceptance of their offer today, making it official.

Oh, and by the way...the company was bought out on July 1st. You know, just to add a little more stress.

Knowing how hard of a decision this has been for you, I wish you a smooth and lucrative transition into retirement. Don't let the traffuck sour your anticipated freedom from the working stiff lifestyle that is to come. I'm happy for you, keep on keeping on!!!

Eyes on the prize.
No doubt the commute will suck up your free time but, it'll be worth it in the end when you can say that you are retired.
For a short time, I had a 90 mile round trip that sucked up 3 hours per day.
But I got to retire earlier than I thought.
Eyes on the prize.
Congratulations and early congratulations on your retirement man.

It’s much easier to keep a seasoned employee than to train a new one, that’s for sure. I can see why they would have agreed to your demands. You’ve been there for long enough you know the ins-and-outs. Anyone in a higher up position would be able to see that.

Congratulations!

Seems like you’ve become comfortable with the decision to make the change, and I hope everything goes well for you.

I did those same hours for 30+ years commuting from one side of the SF Bay Area to the other, ya get used to it. 😸

And seeing the light at the end of the tunnel will help make the last of your work career that much easier to take.

Good luck with your new position!

Good for you, Hopefully the company that bought them is not a venture capital firm or someone that just wants to merge the like companies together.
That was on everyone's minds, I can tell you that. However, their background suggests otherwise. We have capabilities that they didn't have. Also, they are a company that the (former) owners of our place have known and worked with for the past fourteen years. Ownership assured us that this was a move that will benefit us, so I'm just going to go with that. Truly, there isn't a damn thing I could do to change it, so why fret over it, right? Five years. They just have to keep it together for five more years... ;)

I have one question for you...Was the person you are replacing happy in the job?
I laughed at your response (question) because, no...my boss was not happy in his position. However, my boss has never been happy with anything in life, it would seem. He's a cantankerous, obstinate, crotchety old man. Twenty years ago, he was a cantankerous, obstinate, crotchety younger man! He's just being himself, and the position has nothing to do with it.

Hey if you know that, and know how everything works, and you wont be bored anymore...then what the heck!!! Godspeed to ya!!!
