Modoc Guy builds a Jeep

Well, I can’t just sit and do nothing, so I’ve been working on all the wiring the Jeep needs to run the lockers.
I finally decided on where to put the switches.

I relocated the on-off switch for the passenger air bag, and used that spot on the center console to mount the locker switches.

I cut a 1/8” thick piece of aluminum the size of the opening and cut a couple straps to make a clamp arrangement.

I punched a slot in it for the wirings routing, over bent the ARB switch bracket to 60 degrees, mounted it angled slightly toward the drivers POV.

And when I finished the switches, I started working up a wiring harness for the Rubi locker pump.
I dug up a relay and almost enough wire to finish it up, so now I’m off to the store.

Just got an email from Tom Woods, DS is supposed to be here Friday! That’s good news! 😸

Who knows, maybe this thing will come together in time to make the ‘con.
 
Well done, and looks tidy. Would be cool if you could 3D print a cover for the wiring, but I OCD digress.
Might need a plan B for the Con. Fire season is in full bore!

Thought about a cover, but I don’t have any of my sheet metal equipment available. And it’ll work for now.

I’m hoping we get a break with the fires. We’ve been lucky around here, hopefully everything will stay safe around the trails.

And as I’m writing this, I see the trail’s closed.

DS is in, but it’s still vibrating.

Called Tom Woods and spoke with Josh about my issue.

I’ve been trying to minimize the angle of the carden on the DS, which we think is the issue. Right now I’ve got 2 degrees at the pinion, and only 3 1/2 degrees at the carden with the MML in.

Josh said I should be running the carden at 12 to 22 degrees, and 2 degrees down on the pinion end.

So that means I need to take the MML out to put that much angle on the carden.
I’m gonna pull it out in the morning. I’ve put those in and out way too many times lately, but hopefully this will be the last time.

But at least I’ve got the wiring almost done. Or at least I think I do. 🤣
 
I looked at it. I don’t think I wanna go that far.

Depending on the long arm you had I was assuming it may have ended up being less work purely because the brackets for the frame would be easier to locate. We need to get on the trail again so we can see how the lomg/mid/short arms stack up.

I agree with trail testing it. I’ve tried to read all the short/mid/long arm debates to get an answer for which is the best way to go. And I understand the drawbacks of what I have now.

But after the money I’ve spent lately, I want to test and take my time on any more changes. I’ll let performance dictate direction.

I want to crawl this rig, but that’s not the only thing I wanna do with it. It needs good highway manners. I’m thinking I want to do the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Al-Can Highway.
All those require different strengths in the rigs capabilities, and since my pockets aren’t infinitely deep, I gotta take it easy 😉
 
Well, MML is out, and vibration is still there.

I could only get about 7 degrees on the carden joint, so I gotta think about how I could get a few more degrees.

I’m gonna slide a spacer under the transmission mount tomorrow and test to see if it makes any difference.

Who knows, if it helps, maybe a TT is the answer. 🤷‍♂️

So, I’ve got all the wiring done and checked out!

I actually surprised myself in that I did it once, and didn’t have re-do anything!

Put the rig up on jack stands and verified lock and unlock. So now I only need to put some wheeling time on it. 😸

Still dealing with DS vibration. Called TW, and got the next thing to check out to diagnose the problem.

Couldn’t get to it cuz the dash and console were apart due to the wiring, but that’s done now. I’ll post more later on the DS issue.
 
Well, another test drive this morning and check of my vibration issues, and then back on the phone with the Tom Woods shop to discuss my findings.

The test drive was to see if I had a vibration all the time, or just under load.
And it’s all the time, no difference under load, or in neutral.
And also no change in vibration at any angle, that’s from stock engine/transmission angle, up to 1”MML and 1” transmission skid drop.

So the tech and I agreed it’s unlikely I could get two bad DS’s in a row. Though he said they’d be more than happy to check the balance again. (and I’ll probably take them up on that)

We also reasoned that since I had no problems with the SYE before the build, it’s probably not the problem.

Which leaves the Rubi Dana 44.

So now I need to look at how I can check the runout on the pinion. I don’t know, bad yoke, bent pinion shaft? It doesn’t sound like a bad bearing at all to me.

This is where I am with trouble shooting at this point, and if anyone else has any ideas, I’m open to suggestions.

I’ll tell ya right now, I’m not looking forward to pulling that Dana 44 out for repairs. 😾
