What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

Chopped ice from the driveway all afternoon. Boring, but needed to get done before next snowstorm blocked the door completely.

    Welding Helmet

I went to my local welding shop and they let me try a variety of helmets in their welding booth. I needed something with great visibility and ergonomics for a MIG/TIG stainless steel multi-position tube welding test, and chose the ESAB A60. It has a big viewing area, yellow tint which helps me...

    Clutch Interlock Switch Bypass

My mom taught me how to drive with a manual transmission. Lesson one was always wiggle the stick to make sure it is not in gear. And the lesson stuck, I always check.

    Clutch Interlock Switch Bypass

Thanks for tip. I'll wriggle my sorry self under the dash with a jumper wire and sort it out.

    Clutch Interlock Switch Bypass

Thanks for the info. I've looked all over the infowebs and there seems to be a lot of variation between years and models. And in my case disagreement between the owners manual and actual vehicle. I tested to make sure it will start without stepping on the clutch in 4 low. I'll look for a...

    Clutch Interlock Switch Bypass

I want to bypass the clutch interlock switch on my '05 Rubicon and consulted my owners manual for guidance. Page 186 of the manual states that a 20 amp fuse needs to be installed in slot #28 in the the engine bay fuse block. So I got a spare 20 amp fuse, installed it into slot #28, and it...

    Jack stands

Back to jack stands, there was a jack stand safety notice on the CJ2a site: https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/fyiharbor-freight-jack-stand-recall_topic47128.html

What did you do to your TJ today?

Discovered a leaking rear shock during my undercarriage rust remediation, so slapped on some new shocks. Unfortunately, all of my time has been moved from TJ rust work to '46 CJ2a complete engine overhaul. My CJ blew a head gasket so I removed the head and saw that cylinder #1 has severe...

    OEM Radio Identification

Once I stopped emailing and spoke to a human things smoothed right out. Radio on the way.

    OEM Radio Identification

Thanks for the info. I emailed back and forth the radio refurbisher mentioned above, and told him it was from an '05 Wrangler with "RBK" on the front. He said that's not enough, I need the specific model number. In any event, I suppose I'll remove it from the dash to get what 1FactoryRadio needs.

    OEM Radio Identification

The CD player on my '05 Wrangler is dead and I'd like to replace it with a refurbished OEM unit. I was informed that the specific model can be determined by the VIN through the local dealer. I contacted my local dealer, and actually spoke with a human, and they dutifully took my info and said...

    Unfortunate TJ of the year?

It needs an enormous bumper and never-to-be-used winch with synthetic rope to win the annual prize. Have to keep looking but, unfortunately, not very long.

What did you do to your TJ today?

Began scraping and treating all of the underside rust before winter starts. I even found an extra unopened bottle of Total Solutions Rust Converter hiding in the basement.

    Has anyone used Bars Leak?

I used Bars Leaks on a tractor. One of those "I've got to use the tractor right now" problems, so I had little choice. It worked fine and stopped the leak as advertised. But at the soonest opportunity I removed the radiator and took it to a reputable repair shop.. I also flushed out the...

Is Mobil Super High Mileage 10W-30 oil a thing of the past?

I get my oil tested by Blackstone Labs, and their technicians typically respond that as long as your oil meets the correct "S" or "C" spec for your motor, it will be fine. I use whatever full synthetic oil is on sale and run 10,000 to 15,000 miles (depending on vehicle) between changes, and my...

What did you do to your TJ today?

I finally got around to removing, inspecting and cleaning the CCV elbow. i had the bright idea to use two nylon bicycle tire levers to pry out the elbow, and they worked like a charm. No worries about damaging the grommet or gouging anything as could happen with screwdrivers.

    Door Hinge Bushing Long-Term

I got the TMR door bushings last week. Their removal tool worked on the upper hunge bushings but I had to drill out the passenger side lower hinge bushing. I carefully pressed in all of the new bushings and slid in the doors. The doors fit snugly and door wobble disappeared. And I can now...

    Door Hinge Bushing Long-Term

Also, I had to remove the driver side lower hinge to drill out the old bushing, and there was some sort of caulk keeping gunk from getting to the unfinished metal underneath. What is that stuff? I'm inclined to at least prime the metal underneath the hinge, but the caulk stuff seemed to do its...

    Door Hinge Bushing Long-Term

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the delrin bushings are tighter on on the hinge pins? I had some cheapo after market bushings and there is some slop between them and the door hinge pins.

    Door Hinge Bushing Long-Term

I need to replace the rusted door hinge bushings on my '05 Rubicon, and have read a number of posts on which are preferred and why. But I haven't seen anything on how well either bronze or delrin perform over the long-term. What has been the experience of either bronze or delrin, or some other...
