Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

To get caught up from the past month: January brought some pleasantly warm weather and an invite to go wheeling at Morris Mountain ORV park in Delta, AL. If you’re not familiar with MMORV… I used this as an opportunity to get my new trailer dialed in with a relocated jack, toolbox, storage...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

After enduring FB Marketplace for enough weeks it was time for the Dodge to go to the scrap yard. I loaded it onto my new to me trailer and headed to the scrap yard after work. And yes, it’s really convenient having access to reach lifts at work! Right before Christmas my wife’s car ended...

Scrat 2.5 to Scrat Limited 5.9

Is it throwing any codes? My issue doesn't sound completely like yours, but when my 46RE had a wiring issue it didn't have first gear and would take off in second. It almost felt like it was slipping but in reality is was working harder to take off in a steeper gear.

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I have an FRP tune in the ECU so that's ruled out. Its not throwing a CEL, but I haven't hooked up my scanner to read the O2 sensors, fuel trim, Etc. I suspect there is a small vacuum leak or something else minor. A bumper with a built in hitch is my end goal but what I want is either too...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

With the ‘Mandatory’ list completed, a thorough once over and fresh fuel in the tank it was time to drive this rig. The first break in run was to one of our favorite ice cream shops. I was as nervous as I was excited. The trips progressively got further away from the house as I gained faith...

97 TJ with a manual heart of a 5.9L Magnum

I'll second Flyin Ryan. He tuned my 5.2 ECU to my 5.9 engine and I had a great experience. He's a busy guy, so do be patient with him. I had a similar debate with my seats. My factory buckets were comfy and in good shape, but the vinyl was terrible in the summer and a seat cover wasn't going...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

That's the Ram compressor and a line set off a 1996 V6 Dakota (UAC HA111284C ) I'm still working through the AC system (really, its down to fitting the drier / accumulator) and plan to give a parts list once I get it figured out. The drier / accumulator is a tight fit and I'm trying to use all...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

The plug in question is one in between the PCM and transmission (formerly the C103 and C104 on the TJ and C105 and C106 on the Dodge). I spliced in a common Delphi plug to make the TJ body harness marry up to the Dodge engine harness and that's where my issue was.

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

With a little momentum on my side it was time to get this build road worthy. This will be a long post as I got all of this done in about a 2 week span in October working entirely in the dark after work since all of our weekends were tied up. To quote David Freiburger ‘Don’t get it right, just...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I’ve finally taken the time to post some updates to this thread… I still stand by this previous post that the money for a rebuild should be squirreled away in your project budget, but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to spend that money rebuild the transmission if its not required. My local...

Scrat 2.5 to Scrat Limited 5.9

Look at the gauge issue from a different perspective - you can't overheat or have low oil pressure if you don't have gauges!

Scrat 2.5 to Scrat Limited 5.9

I just dealt with practically the same problem. I believe you have 2 separate and unrelated issues here - the gauges and the PCM. I'm not positive about this so someone feel free to fact check me, but I don't think that a CCD PCM will run a PCI bus (or vise versa) so your PCM shouldn't be...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

Used transmissions are always a gamble and a rebuild should be carried in your budget for a project like this. Evidently my transmission rebuild is happening...now. Either the torque converter (which is brand new) or the pump in the transmission wiped itself out after the second test drive...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

My current combo is an ebay aluminum TJ replacement radiator with a Spal 30101516 fan and a Mishimoto shroud I had leftover from the 2.5L. With this combo I have less than an inch to the water pump pulley but could pick up another inch if I cut the threaded portion off the water pump.

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I’ve managed to make some really good progress over the last few weeks (to get back to where I was 2 months ago…) The first order of business was to free the new engine from the donor truck. A few hours spent on a Friday after work: I bought the truck knowing it had a 5.2L in it, but I was...

    5.3 LS swapped TJ

Add an auxiliary transmission cooler, keep the filter and fluid changed and it'll be fine. 4L60Es get a little bit of an unwarranted bad rap - In stock form they're decent, but once they're rebuilt with the right updates they can be a reliable transmission in my experience.

    MasterCraft Seat Install Question

I touched on my install a little bit HERE. I ended up removing the 'spacers' because it made the seats sit way too high. If you have some flat bar and a drill, you can install these seats without the brackets. I ordered mine from AutoAnything only because a 20% off coupon worked and the lead...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I’d thought through several different scenarios and fixes, from remanufactured heads to a brand new crate motor – I was all over the place. My preference was the new motor (at $2300), I just had a hard time stomaching that right now. I kept a watch on FB Marketplace just in case and happened up...

Trying to get it mostly right the first time: A 5.9 Magnum, 46RE swapped and tummy tucked daily driver TJ

I'll preface by saying I haven't taken it apart yet. I am far from an expert, but I like to think I have a clue when it comes to engines - this one has me a little stumped. The donor Durango ran fine and had well used but clean oil when I got it but now with the spark plugs out, I can fill the...
