    TJ Frame Replacement Maintenance Items

Great, will add control arms and vapor recovery line to the list. I saw the vapor recovery line when doing the brake lines and the rust was even worse than the fuel line. Now whether to purchase an OEM set or go adjustable for future upgrades 🤔

    TJ Frame Replacement Maintenance Items

Hey everyone, I am on the verge of replacing my frame; finally addressing the largest flaw of my Jeep. What are some maintenance items I should perform while I'm in there? This can include those only possible while the frame is off or more easily completed under the circumstances. Model...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

If you're going planning on a rebuild of the np242 anyways, you could swap the input shaft from your np231 to make it match you nsg370. You could even sell your np231 to a XJ guy who needs a medium input spline afterwards and make a couple bucks back.

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

I think your transmission should be the first concern. Also, do you have a lift? What year is it?

NP242 swap into TJ: "shift linkage" mods needed (using cable system)

For future reference, If you change your mind on modifying the existing transfer case shifter assembly, you can find them for $30-40 all in from dead jeeps. I don't think they have a np242 shifter listed on the site but they have several np242 transfer cases, so if you call them they'll...

whoops got my grand cherokees mixed up. this transfer case is gonna be a real testament to new venture/new process interchangeable parts haha. you can also find the shifter assembly from dead jeeps for around $30-40.

you could probably find a copy of the instructions online

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

I don't think the ZJ's with np242 came with a cv front driveshaft, based on this thread, so you should be straight for a bolt-on connection.

NP242 swap into TJ: "shift linkage" mods needed (using cable system)

Regarding the cable shifters... it's funny you mention it because when I bought my np242 for swapping into my jeep I wanted to plan ahead with a cable shifter in case I got a lift at some point in the future. I spoke to someone through the novak service line because they had both an np231 and...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

I found conflicting information online regarding cross-compatibility, but cobra transmissions sells all the tailhousings for the np242 over several years, including casting numbers in the description. If you can identify the casting number on your np231 tailhousing (specifically the tailhousing...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

Regarding cross-compatible tailhousing swaps, I think the shafts have different bearings between the np231 and np242 based on the rebuild kits. It may be worth the effort to call one of those online salvage jeep part out companies to source a tailhousing. i know at least dex jeeps has a...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

I believe the hole for the vss sensor hole is not drilled out on the ZJ np242 because the sensor is in the transmission, so this only applies to an XJ np242. This thread has someone who did an np242 swap in his np249 ZJ and ran into this issue. If you could find the tail cone off of an XJ...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

the nvg3550 is the same transmission I have; it is referred to as the nv3550 interchangeably on the forums since it was the naming convention used in the gm truck applications it was derived from. (novak) Based on what I have read, you should realistically only have issues if you have a...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

That's a good point! By swapping the input shafts, you would be solving the majority of the compatibility issues. It is a more involved procedure since you have to take the case apart, but if you think you'll see significant wheeling, then you could get a rebuild kit and do it while you're in...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

Regarding the clocking of the case, I think that is only a concern with auto transmissions, so you should be fine in that case.

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

If you don't mind finding a different speedo solution, then it is a viable swap. The only concern with compatibility aside from that is if it is an np242HD (mated to the V8 models) or an np242j (mated to the 4.0L models). Although both were offered on the WJ, you cannot narrow down the input...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

That's right, thanks @Wildman . The WJ and ZJ, which also came with an NP242, would not be a plug-and-play install in a TJ due to the lack of a hole for a speedo gear in the transfer case; They track speed in other forms. While you could potentially adapt for different forms of speed tracking...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

I believe the input shaft length issue is with the older np242 from grand cherokees. If you get it out of a 97-01 cherokee then it should match right up.

    OEM Brake Line Routing

I am currently replacing all my old rusted brake lines with pre-bent stainless steel. I'm on the last line, and at some point, PO replaced the front passenger side hard line with universal tubing, so I can’t figure out the path the line has to go through. I am stuck on whether the driver's side...

    NP242 Transfer Case Swap?

question 1: yes, it has all the same positions as a 231, plus the extra function in full time 4wd (including same crawl ratio in 4lo as 231); for context, they were offered in XJ as an upgrade and meant to be used in low grip situations on asphalt (i.e. rain, slow, sleet, gravel, etc) where...
