    Did my alternator just die?

SOLVED! Wow, sometimes I look at how long it takes me to solve a simple issue like this and I wonder how I managed to ever get through an Engineering Degree.... I should have just stared at the wiring diagram in the FSM and thought this through but instead I kept looking at YouTube videos and...

    Did my alternator just die?

OK update time - issue seemed to sort itself out as soon as I ordered the replacement alternator but when I fitted the new alternator and took her for a good thrash the check gauges light came on again and voltage output dropped to 12.1V again after about 5 minutes of driving. So, whatever is...

    Did my alternator just die?

You unutterable bastard. You just had to go an say that didn't you @TheBoogieman ? Here I was, happily thinking I had fixed the issue myself by careful effort, testing and good engineering practices and you come along and say "....for now". Let me tell you why you are so completely wrong and...

Are Dana 44 Drum Brakes the same as Dana 35?

I have an Aussie spec 1999 TJ. All the Aussie TJs came with Dana 44's on the rear (yay). I have a leaking wheel cylinder so ordered up a couple of new cylinders, new drums and shoes and a couple of hardware kits from Rock Auto so I could give the brakes a birthday whilst I was in there doing...

    Did my alternator just die?

In this process I think I have discovered something odd about the way the "Check Gauges" light works. If what I am saying is crazy then can someone please correct me, but the behaviour of both the oil pressure gauge and now the voltmeter is similar. Note this is on a '99 TJ that has a "proper"...

    Did my alternator just die?

Ok update time! I removed the battery and mounting plate and checked the battery temperature sensor. It seemed OK and measured 9.1K Ohms which is in-spec. I took the time to reassemble it, took the time to make sure all the connectors on the battery and alternator were clean and fully seated...

    Did my alternator just die?

Did some more testing today - the control lead to the generator has a good ground so that's not the problem. At this point I reckon I just need to swap it out so will do that once my RockAuto order arrives!

    Did my alternator just die?

I think the first thing I'm going to do in the morning is check that the ground wire going to the plug at the back of the alternator is good. I'm starting to wonder if some of the recent O2 sensor issues I've been having might relate to a bad ground and Eric O recently did a video on a TJ where...

    Did my alternator just die?

Just took the 99 TJ out for a drive to see if I had resolved an unrelated issue with poor idle / hesitation (cleaned out the throttle body, IAC and replaced TPS). All seemed OK but half way up the street the "check gauges" light came on and the battery voltage indicator was showing >10V...

    1999 4.0 ticking

Pressing the wrist pins into the rod ends looks really scary when you watch it on YouTube. I made up a little jig out of some scrap bits of steel so that pins could be pushed all the way down and they would centre and put the pins in the freezer overnight. Used a propane torch to heat the...

    1999 4.0 ticking

'course what you are better off doing is pulling the motor and doing a complete rebuild on it (assuming nothing substantial is wrong). Its not as hard to do as you think...

    1999 4.0 ticking

I agree. You can do an in-frame refresh on that motor and put new pistons and bearings in without a full rebuild. Is it going to last another 280K? Nope, but for $150 worth of parts and a day under the car it will probably give you another few good years out of that motor.

RPMs up and down while coming to a stop and sometimes at a stop

That sounds like it could be an airleak around the throttle body...

    Sleep question (Is this unusual?)

Andy - are you sleeping well otherwise? What you are describing might be related to an underlying sleep disorder like Sleep Apnoea. If your regular sleep cycle is being disrupted then your ability to transition through REM sleep gets disrupted and that can lead to all sorts of odd side...

    2003 TJ oil pressure issue

Yeah - someone here with more experience than me may chime in so happy to be proved wrong but I think a lot of people's concerns with oil pressure in 4.0's might not be grounded in an actual issue. Sometimes you just need to send-it and sometimes you need to stop and carefully evaluate the...

Length of O2 bungs between early / late TJ models

Top is factory, bottom is aftermarket but bottom is from an '02 and I seemed to recall that this was consistent with other 02 and newer TJs - if anyone can correct me if that is wrong would appreciate it. Either way, I'm going to have to cut that bung to a shorter length...

Length of O2 bungs between early / late TJ models

Seems that exhausts for the earlier TJ's have their O2 sensors in a "short" bung that leaves the tip of the O2 sensor in the exhaust stream. Later model TJ's seem to have a much taller bung that moves the O2 sensor out of the direct line of exhaust gas. Anyone know why? I can confirm putting...

    2003 TJ oil pressure issue

I can only share my experience with this issue but if you google you will find a lot of similar stories. I have a '99 with 90K Miles. Oil pressure sits about 21 psi when warming up or under gentle load. When hot and you come to a stop the indicated pressure drops to zero and check gauge light...

    Rockauto shipping rant

Ultimately the answer is because... Rock Auto doesn't have a shipping department. The stuff they sell doesn't physically exist in a warehouse owned or controlled by them. Rock Auto was founded by a small group of guys (I want to say they were IT guys?) who basically built an eBay style direct...

How to remove the muffler from the cat pipe?

Yeah thanks - I certainly tried pretty hard with no success. That section of exhaust is a 2 1/2 inch, right? Shop near me has the only V band clamp in that size in my whole state so might go grab it in the morning...
