Minimum Clearance for T-Case Skid Plate

Looking for some input from more experienced fab guys here. I'm working on mocking up a flat skid plate for the TJ in conjunction with a JB Conversions SS-SYE; from my initial measurements with the transfercase stuffed above the frame, I should be able to clear the skid plate by 3/16 at the...

    Utah Moab September 16-18

I decided on a last minute road trip before I start my new job and I’m going to be spending a few days in Moab, at least Friday 16th - Sunday 18th. Anyone that is going to happen to be there, please let me know, I need a wheeling buddy. I’m planning on the the more difficult trails but I’m open...

    Weird sound when in reverse

Hmmmm, to start with I would see if that happens if you have the clutch pressed in vs with the clutch out to start to narrow it down. If it doesnt happen with the clutch pressed in, its not a transmission problem. What year and transmission is your Jeep?

Winch plate options for the Warn Rock Crawler front bumper?

After posting this thread last year, I ended up going with the Smittybilt raised winch plate. I ended up repainting it and I think the setup looks ok. I have the same Warn front bumper so this is roughly what it will look like once you have the winch setup.

Differential gear wear at 12.5k miles, is this normal?

If your concerned about it, have a shop check the backlash and run a contact pattern. Its quick and easy and it'll show if anything is failing. As long as your not getting any howling, or grinding, or any kind of feedback from the gears, why worry about it though.

    Weird sound when in reverse

I have a '98 with an AX-15, it makes a slight whining noise when moving in reverse due to the way the gears are straight cut instead of helical (if I recall correctly). My transmission has less than 10,000 miles on it and it did it from the day I got it. Apparently thats just totally normal for...

    Tire Weight and Gears

Lets not overlook the fact that difference between 4.56 and 4.88 is negligible. Yes theres and "ideal" ratio for different tire sizes but the difference between 3.55 on 35's and 4.88 on 35's is what justifies the pricetag. If your happy with your tire/gear combo now, I dont know why you wouldn't...

How do I remove the motor mount bolts?

My dumbass buddy got a leak from his oil pan after doing his motor mounts bc he jacked it by the oil pan 🤷‍♂️. If it works then it works

How do I remove the motor mount bolts?

Use a jack to support the engine NOT BY PUTTING IT ON THE OIL PAN but by lifting from the bellhousing of the transmission. Use an adjustable wrench on one end and a large ratcheting wrench or preferably a breaker bar to loosen the bolts. If you have access to an air or battery powered impact...

Suspension setup: mud / snow vs crawling?

Why not? Like I admitted, longs arms are NOT for rock crawling, but when clearance isn't in the equation, why wouldn't they be preferable?

Suspension setup: mud / snow vs crawling?

This is all budget dependent of course but the people I know or know of with dedicated rigs for mud, snow, or hill climbing, use a long arm suspension. Now long arms are not good on TJs for rock crawling, but in ultra low traction you need to be able to get over obstacles like logs or rocks...

    Camshaft

Take a look at Comp Cams, they make a variety of kits with the timing and whatnot. I don't think they make OEM replacements though, so if you want an stock on you may have to look elsewhere.

    What gears do I want?

Your transmission (42RLE) requires a deep axle ratio because of the transmissions gearing, the first gear on your transmission is like second gear on a manual, so you need more torque to get moving. Also, because of how deep your 4th gear is, you need deeper gearing to keep the RPM's higher at...

    Favorite lockers?

With a 5 speed manual and a 4.0L, 4.56 would be the best for 33 inch tires, and 4.88 would be best for 35 inch tires, if you plan on going to 35's in the next 5 years, go with the 4.88 gears, even if you don't, the difference between 4.56 and 4.88 is marginal at best and you could run the 4.88...
