What is the best 16 inch tire size for my 97 TJ 4-cylinder?

I've got a 98 TJ with the 2.5/five-speed. 3.5" RE lift, swapped-in Dana 44 rear, 285/75/16" (33") tires. I think 285/75/16" tires are a perfect size for a four-cylinder TJ. Not too tall and not too wide. Won't overstress the front Dana 30. You want to regear it to at least 4.88 gears...

Washington Huge WA 4x4 Swap Meet in March 2023

As usual, it was huge and very well attended. Tons of stuff for sale. For me though, I wasn't looking for anything in particular (I've pretty much got everything I need). But it was fun to walk around, and I got caught up with someone I haven't seen in a while. I also drove my new Jeep to...

Help me pick a hawse fairlead

I've got a Warn M-8000 winch on my Jeep. I switched out the steel cable when it kinked for a synthetic line. I changed out the metal rollers on the fairlead for some Daystar non-metal replacement rollers. I'm not trusting them. I've since read poor reviews, and you can see in the picture...

Feel free to talk to me about overlanding with a 2.5 powered TJ.

Washington Huge WA 4x4 Swap Meet in March 2023

Awesome swap meet. Literally, twice I overheard someone on their cell phone essentially telling someone they needed to get there, they were missing out.

What did you do to your TJ today?

I just figured these not-expensive shocks could only do so much. We have a cobble-stone like road we drive on daily that is sort of my test-bed for ride smoothness. It helped a little there, but shocks are just part of the suspension. Otherwise on road it rides just fine. Maybe someday I'll...

What did you do to your TJ today?

I guess I've just got low expectations for my Jeep's ride quality, and I don't mean that in a bad way.

What did you do to your TJ today?

Maybe a little better. I'm running stiff RE springs, and heavy tires (MT Baja Boss AT that are E-rated with 3 ply sidewalks). I thought I'd try the RS5000X since folks were saying good things and I knew my ride could be improved on.

What did you do to your TJ today?

Yes. If you rotated your pinion up for a CV rear driveshaft, you rotated your shock mounts down (and closer to the rocks). Which now further extended your rear shocks, and now limits your available down/extension travel. And brings your shock body closer to the rear axle tube. That's why...

What did you do to your TJ today?

They sell inexpensive rear shock extension/relocation brackets to fix that problem. Here are a couple: https://www.ironrockoffroad.com/product/tj-bolt-on-rear-shock-relocation-brackets.html https://www.extremeterrain.com/rubicon-express-rear-bolton-shock-relocation-mounts-9706-tj.html...

Washington Huge WA 4x4 Swap Meet in March 2023

Swap meet is this coming Sunday. I'm stoked. I really look forward to this once-a-year event. I have to remember to bring a little backpack for all the small stuff I collect during the day. Kids make a killing there offering to haul stuff out to your vehicle (for a fee) with their small...

Looking for feedback and suggestions on my 97 2.5 build

You might have just gotten used to it. You will notice a difference going from 4.10 to 4.88. It'll start out easier in first gear, and you'll be able to use 5th gear more. It is a win-win. You'll be turning about 3000rpm at 70mph. There's really not much you can do to make more power out...

Looking for feedback and suggestions on my 97 2.5 build

Swap out the gears for 4.88 gears to help the 2.5 engine handle the 33" tires.

    Height adjustable seat brackets

I had an 89 Isuzu Trooper II at one time, and the driver's seat had a lever you would use to raise and lower the seat. Seems like it had quite the high-low range. Could probably be found cheap in a junkyard and bring home and see if you could make it work.

Rancho RS5000X shocks look rough right out of the box

Sanded and painted mine rustoleum metallic silver. If you don't sand and paint them they'll look like crap in a year and rusty. Metallic silver does make them look high end.

For us old guys with BPH (trouble peeing)

Thanks for sharing. I go to my urologist about every six months ever since my PSA went ever so slightly above normal. It is all part of "Men's health".

Rubicon Express Superflex Lower Control Arm Bushing / Joint Part Number

It is easy enough to remove just one control arm and take a look at it. If it is the joint I'm thinking of, there's a small allen socket set- screw that you loosen or remove, and then the unit kinda unscrews (there's a tool, but I used needle nose pliers). It might just need a little cleaning...

What have you done to your TJ to improve ground clearance and get rid of hangy downy things?

When I rotated my rear Dana 44 pinion up for the CV driveshaft, it rotated the lower shock mounts down. I crunched one four-wheeling on a rock, so I had a shop cut them off and reweld new lower shock mounts that didn't hang down. Great! Domino effect. Now my rear shocks were too long. They...

What did you do to your TJ today?

Replaced my Bilstein 5100 series shocks with Rancho RS5000X shocks. Replaced the rubber isolators on top of all four springs. Swapped out the polyurethane bumpstops back to the factory yellow bumpstops. Adjusted the bumpstops so I now have 1" more travel before they "bump". Tightened up my...

What should I bring when driving my TJ from Alaska to Nevada?

If nobody has mentioned it already, bring a code reader. It has helped me a couple times on my trips. You never know when the check engine light comes on if it is something that needs addressing now, or is something that can wait. Unless you have a code reader.
