Gladiator Jeep wave: yay or nay?

I believe the Jeep Waving Hierarchy dictates that newer Jeeps must initiate the wave to elder Jeeps. As such, JKs, JLs, and JTs need to wave first. Since most people who own them aren't real Jeepers, they rarely do. But when they do I return the favor. Also, if a newer Jeep is obviously built...

New to Jeeps: Looking for opinion on 4 cylinder models

I bought my SE new in 97. At the time I didn't even think about 4 vs 6 cyl (I bought it using a broker - long story). If I had to do it all over again, I would go for the 6. BUT I can't rag on the 4 very much. It's been a good vehicle. Off road it's every bit as capable as the Sport model...

Did you know the first Zambonis were built on Jeeps?

If you lived in Southern California over the past 20 years or so you would be familiar with a man named Huell Howser and an PBS show called 'California Gold'. He did an episode at a place called Iceland in Paramount, CA which was owned by the Zamboni family, where they talk about the origins of...

Offroad Trail Apps, How to Use Them?

I had downloaded the trial version of Gaia but with some of the other resources I found I didn't see it to be very useful to me. Alltrails looks like a good service and I use it a lot, but I use the website for researching trails - I don't really use the app that much. If you just go to their...

Offroad Trail Apps, How to Use Them?

I run an android double-din head unit in my dash and trail maps are one of the best things about it. I use an app called Locus Maps to display trail maps and routes. My primary map source is California Trail Maps (www.californiatrailmaps.com) which integrates directly with Locus Maps. I use...

    1997 TJ owners recall alert

Unfortunately driving on the beach here isn't legal. Most of my off roading has been in the desert - a mixture of terrain from loose sand to big rocks. Honestly, any terrain I've had the balls to try, the Jeep has tackled with ease. It is running the stock 3.73s - mine was bone stock when I...

    1997 TJ owners recall alert

When I was looking up the info I found a D26 recall for the 97 4.0, so there were some recalls for that configuration. Check the lookup by VIN from my original reply to see if there's anything relevant to your Jeep

    1997 TJ owners recall alert

I was thinking about that myself. The PCM issue may still be relevant, but I'm sure any 97 TJ out there is no longer running the factory catalytic converter, so I doubt that the inspection of the cat would be useful since an aftermarket cat probably isn't covered anyways. The recall search by...

    1997 TJ owners recall alert

This recall is from 2006. Since it was emissions related, completing the repair was mandatory in California before you could renew your registration. I had it done when it first was announced - there should be a sticker under the hood indicating it's been done. The details of the recall are...

    Dashboard paint

I used Color Coat paint from SEM. I have the grey interior and I went with Thomas Bus Grey. Can't actually tell you how close it is to the original color because my dash was so tired, but it looks great. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PL06NA/?tag=wranglerorg-20...

    100MPH?

Off-peak freeway speeds around here are about 80 - I've crept up over that on a few occasions. The Jeep handles it fine but the sudden realization that I'm basically driving a big sail usually prompts me to back off the gas just a touch.

    Sound bar delete?

I never had a soundbar and the lack of interior lighting has always been annoying. I finally found this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046KIABG/?tag=wranglerorg-20 It's a battery powered LED light that straps to the roll bar. It's even got a quick release to remove the light module...

    Quitting smoking

When I quit I always had trouble on the 3's - day 3, week 3, month 3... I 'finally quit' about 5 years ago for financial reasons. Still cheated an awful lot for the first couple years, but eventually that ended. A good trick is to keep the rest of your routine as normal as possible. I used...

BFG T/A KO2: any reason not to buy them?

I can't speak to the specifics of the Rubi & 33's, but when I went up to 31's on my SE they fit in the wells, but my turning radius took a major hit and I did some damage to the fenders on the trail. They 'fit', but they didn't really 'work'. I'm a cheap bastard so I went with a budget boost...

Need advice on lifting a 99 TJ 4 cylinder

Agreed. 31's are a fairly common size and give the Jeep a nice stance. The budget boost is cheap, easy, and gives you just enough lift without impacting the ride. I get about 13-14 mpg with the same setup on my 97 4-cyl, so they don't impact gas mileage much.

    Jeep Beach West

So @06TJ35's mentioned camping / Jeeping at Pismo Beach on the California coast and I started looking into it and ran across the site for Jeep Beach West (http://www.jeepbeachwest.com) the first weekend in October. Has anyone ever heard of this or attended? The site isn't fully updated for 2018...

    New member from Los Angeles

I thought so after I posted that. I've considered going camping up there but never have. I knew there was camping on the sand but didn't realize vehicle's could actually touch it. I need to put this on my to-do list for the photo op if nothing else. Sent from my LG-H871 using Tapatalk

I'm so mad I could spit (underhood light)

If I only knew at the time that if I paid for the under hood light I'd get two extra cylinders, I might have sprung the extra money

I'm so mad I could spit (underhood light)

To the best of my knowledge 97SE's didn't come with an under hood light. Mine has never had one, although I've never even thought to look for a connector. They might have included it as part of the Sport package, but not the SE's.
