Future engine swap for my 98 TJ?

While manual transmissions seem to be much more finicky with resect to gear ratio, the vehicles (even the ones with automatics) that I have had with 3.73 gears performed progressively more poorly as the diameter of the tires got bigger than about 28" I agree go for gears especially if you can...

    The Shovel

No criticism intended...not much sand here. I carry a USGI trifold in all the vehicles Its plenty enough shovel for me; If I need to dig in rough soil I get out the USGI mini pick mattock or the matt-ax (depending on which vehicle is being used). The only time that I carry a full sized spade or...

    Bring back the 4.0!

...I have had, I think, four 4.0 Jeep engines; they have never been particularly powerful nor torquey... All had to have their axles re-geared (when I put in lockers and installed larger diameter tires. They are best described as, mostly, adequate, though none has gotten fuel mileage as good as...

    Jeep Camping

I agree, With Jerry; however, when camping I use a relatively portable 35 AH sealed lead acid battery for tunes, recharging devices and tent lights (Its too small for the portable fridge, however)... will likely get a 100AH Battery when this li'l battery gives up (its about 5 years old). Got...

    Tents: how do you camp?

It is an older (about 3 years) Wally-mart Ozark 10 x 10 vertical leg canopy (it actually measures closer to 9.5 x9.5 when set up)... With chinese/Wal-Mart stuff; you basically pays your money and takes your chance's... this one was like $89 on sale. Edit; Ozark trail 2014 WMT-1010A/30183...

Why did you buy your TJ

Bought the TJ to replace the set up, rusting away CJ-7... Enjoy!

Who parks their TJ for the winter?

I park mine for the winter mostly because I no longer go into the mountains to snow wheel. Surprisingly the Explorer is a far better DD than the TJ, IMO (handles and brakes better). What do I do when it goes back on the street? Re-insure it. Check the fluids and tire pressures then start it...

Why do you drive a Jeep?

I first started driving (modified no stocker will do) Jeeps in the 1980s because they were simply the best reasonable cost off road vehicle that was, relatively easily, modifiable to fit my needs (I four wheel to camp). Stayed with them because they continued to be the best (in the reasonable...

    Shop Presses

I have the HF 20 ton it is adequate for most things; 'though as mentioned it is short, at least for me. I have had less than good experience with harbor freight hydraulic jack longevity/seals but jacks are fairly easy to come by. A couple of chunks of 8 or 10 inch channel under the legs will...

Curious: Are there any "mandatory" or "no-brainer" mods for the TJ?

Haven't had time to do much modding yet but so far; Installed four 10,000 lb. (or greater) frame mounted tow points; 2 front and 2 rear. Disconnect the Sirius radio (these obnoxious folks will bill you even if you neither use it nor sign up for it). Remove rear trailer hitch (a 1000 pound tow...

Is an AR rifle really ideal for home defense?

...Think I would rather just pull out the bear spray with dye...won't likely have time to take clothes off, or acquire huskies... I agree with not needing an AR; wrong tool...IMO. Enjoy!

What vehicle would you own if you couldn't own a Wrangler?

...If I couldn't own a Wrangler... That's easy... done it; A CJ-7 or CJ-8; with a modified SEFI late Ford Explorer 5.0, 4 wheel disk brakes, modified Scout axles, ARBs, 4:1 transfer case gears in the 300, 5 speed manual tranny w/4:1 first, high compliance springs etc. etc. I don't believe that I...

Do you guys still use CB radios?

..Not sure that I have even used one this century. Didn't even bother to install one in the CJ-7. still have a couple on the shelf in the basement (I think) (one was even tweaked and peaked for full legal power output, stock output was under 3 watts).... might consider putting one in the Rubi...

    Tents: how do you camp?

Here is a pic of a canopy in the TJ the passenger seat is moved all the way forward. To allow the back door to shut the canopy has to be moved away from the wheel well enough to clear the hinge bump on the door. If I can find some fresh batteries I will take a pic with the canopy cross wise...

    Tents: how do you camp?

I have been considering building another camping trailer but so far have managed to resist! ...removing the rear hitch to install (Suburban) tow hooks hasn't helped .... Enjoy!

    Tents: how do you camp?

After removing (not folding) the back seat, this (supposedly 10x10, actually closer to 9.5x9.5)canopy, awkwardly, fits cross wise behind the front seats, in front of the wheel wells or length wise behind either front seat and the tailgate. I had to downsize the load significantly when moving...

What annoyances do you have with the Jeep Renegade?

...Am I the only one that noticed the similarity in grilles between this and an IH Scout? (second pic from scoutparts.com) Perhaps; a jeep PRODUCT imitating an imitation of a Jeep??? Enjoy!
