Why not just replace the seals? Mine had a drip when I got it. I replaced the valve cover, oil pan and rear seal... no more leak.

Most if not all shafts line up towards the middle of the splines. Maybe to allow for some adjustability, or stronger than the transistion point between slpines and shaft?
