More camping in ID. This is in Kingston in Silver Valley. I could spend all summer here…

We hiked the Pulaski Tunnel Trail, named after Edward Pulaski who saved 45 men from the 1910 fires that swept across the Western US. He was a self-taught woodsman. The 45 firefighters were panicking. Pulaski knew the area well and convinced them to follow him to a nearby mine. Once inside one man tried to run out. Pulaski pulled his pistol and threatened to shoot any man that left the mine. Nobody moved. He instructed them to lay face down in the mine to avoid as much smoke as possible. They all went unconscious. 40 of the 45 woke up. Afterward, they made their way into Wallace. Their shoes were melted off their feet, clothes were in tatters. After checking to see if his wife and daughter were alive, Pulaski remained blind in the hospital for two months. Between 75 and 133 people were killed by that Summer’s fire. Pulaski saved 40. We hiked down to the mine. It goes into the mountain 200 feet. It had been abandoned because no vein was found, like most mines.

It was the fires of 1910 that changed forest management methods to fire suppression. Since then methods have changed and they are considered necessary for the ecological health of forests.

Pulaski invented the “Pulaski” tool used by firefighters.

Welcome to Idaho

I can weld the Setrab cooler brackets on your V-bar if you want. Or not. Just an offer. 🙂 My welder could come over there sometime. With this gauge steel 110V is all it needs to work.

Pulling vacuum on the AC. I haven’t had AC since I bought the rig when I lived in TX in Dec 2016. I had a mechanic claim to fix it in 2018. I had cold air for 3 days and it cost me $600. Soon after we moved to WA. I don’t need AC except for about a month out of the year, and even then the top is off, but I want everything working.

Before the auto swap I had the system evacuated and during the swap I installed a new evap in the HVAC box. I also went through some of the system and replaced seals and valves. I’m just now getting to seeing if it will hold a vacuum. I’m keeping it under vacuum for two hours because the system was open for a few weeks. If it holds I’ll add some PAG 46 and then my refrigerant and we’ll see what happens.

When I did the auto swap I also did the RMS and a new oil pan and gasket. With the transmission out it made access easier. I didn’t have any leaks initially. After three weeks I noted a drop. I thought my RMS may have failed. Then I noted that the CCV valve cover was pretty gunked up around the CCV gasket, so I cleaned it all up and replaced it. That’s the second time I’ve replaced it IIRC. The first time was pretty early in TJ ownership.I hope this solves it.

What gauges and pump do you use? I’ve been thinking about getting some, but don’t really know enough about it to know what I want. LOL

Make sure you fill it to the system spec. Overfilling isn't a good thing.

Check the pump by the clutch for oil stains. Any oil at joints indicates a leak. When doing o rings or other connections use the compressor oil as lube and sealant.

You really ought to replace the accumulator/drier if the system has been open or had a leak that let out all the refrigerant.

I replaced several seals and used compressor oil. I did not replace the drier. I’m onto this $200 plus the $600 6 years ago.

I’m tired of messing with this. I vacuumed the system for 2.5 hours. After that I left it for1 hour and the low pressure port gauge went up from -29 to -21. I’ve got a leak.

Not sure if I want to go to more trouble. Maybe I’ll re-think it when August comes. Tgat’s the one month AC comes to mind. But I run topless, so blah. I mainly just want everything operational on the Jeep.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got the AC curse.

My ‘87 Fox Body Mustang didn’t have a working AC.
My ‘91 Civic no working AC
My ‘05 F250 no working AC.
My ‘05 TJ no working AC.

Of course, both my sons TJ’s have working AC. 🙄

Arghhhhh

Well, you have the tools to solve this at least.

Yeah, the AC stuff is my neighbors. I’ve got two more annoying issues I’d rather figure out. Tires are shimmying from 40-45 and stupid cut off exhaust is droning. I’m gonna burn this thing if I can’t get the tires balanced.

It’s all Pittsburgh stuff, so HF.

Did you already replace your schrader valves for the service ports? That’s a common leak point

Yes, I replaced all the Schrader valves.

Well, thank you guys for that tidbit of info! I have a A/C Accumulator to go into the Jeep when I finally re-fill it and try to get the A/C working again after many years without it.

Was not thinking to replace the Shrader valves while I'm in there so thank you for helping to further spend my money in prep before I spend it 2-3 times draining & re-filling of a 'while you're there' part. 💰 😄

I might as well just send you my valves since my system has a leak anyway. So annoying. At least it’s only summer for 1 month here.

Do the vacuum check first and see if it holds. No use filling just ”to see.”

Ran a vacuum hold test once before when the compressor went on my wife's prior WK. Already had a set of the HF gauges. Grabbed the HF vacuum pump then. For these once-in-a while efforts, the HF tools worked well.

I just orders a $10 set of valves for TJs. I looked at the $15-$20 valve kits that had 40-130 valves but honestly they had so many valves to hit every corner case that I'd never use 90% of the kit. I hope (likely too optimistically) that the $10 kit with just the TJ valves (and a couple backups within the kit) will be of higher quality than the generic 40+ kits... We'll see.

I'm just hoping the system still works after being empty for so long...

Not sure how your Hemi WK2 A/C is performing but I've found my wife's 2020 WK2 3.6L leaves a lot to be desired on the 'Auto' control. It'll get cool on full fan after a bit but our 2016 Chevy Traverse cools way better than the newer WK2. I did check the WK2 with the gauges a couple years ago but likely will check again when I have them out for the TJ.

Found a Soft Top Frame. He was giving it away. I was second in line. Tried to get it. Offered $25. He said the first guy planned to get it the day before but didn’t and now was waiting. Later he said, it’s not worth $25, but $10 would be nice. So now I have a frame. Just need the top now!

Are you getting a new fabric top or going to get used?
