So I ran in to a major, hidden, defect in the 2.8 diesel swap. Cylinder 2 decided to remodel the block and knock out some walls...those stud mounts, neatly boxing in the failure points are from the engine mounts. This is the only cylinder that was hidden during my inspection. And to top it off, the engine still ran, I drove it into my shop.

I had, literally, the whole car to pull parts I needed from for the swap. I gently removed the entire engine and dash harnesses, I was able to mate the nv3550 to the block, I had the entire dash; and then this.

So my question is, do I rebuild this entire engine or should I just go with a 5.2L Magnum and call it done? The rebuilt is about $2K before accessories, but I have seen enough conversions to know it will talk with the factory TJ dash OR do I spend an unknown amount sourcing the block and all internals to rebuild the 2.8 completely?

I think you are the only one who can truly answer that question.

Do you want the GRUNT of a CRD engine or the speed of a V-8? You are going to spend $2K + to do a 5.2/5/9 V-8 swap if you do it right. So you just need to ask which you want more? And 20+ MPG on the trail & street is another nice plus to the CRD.
