I bought a 2000 TJ for my son to learn to drive in and learn about mechanics. So far so good but the manual transmission has a synchromesh issue going into 3rd gear. I can pull the transmission and get it rebuilt for $1800 but before I do that is there any benefit in trying new oil to see if it helps at all? I've read a lot about Redline MTL and Royal Purple Synchromesh, but what is the best for my situation? The TJ has 96 thousand miles on it and I have no idea when (or if) it was last changed.

It won't hurt to change the transmission fluid, but it's not likely to help much either. Once syncros start going they'll just continue to get worse.

I haven't personally used these guys, but I have them bookmarked for if/when my 3550 goes bye bye.

XP1 Transmission

Maybe someone on here has used them.

Also, at $1800 you're in the same price area as a brand new AX15.
