2002 Wrangler X Stalling issue

I am having an issue with my 2002 Jeep Wrangler X, 6 cylinder, automatic transmission with 124,000 miles. On August 15, 2018 transmission cooling line starting leaking and had both replace and transmission fluid toped off. Since then my jeep has had an issue with stalling out sometimes after hitting the brakes hard it will stall out the next time I come to a stop light. It also sometimes will stall out going from part into reverse. These issues only started after replacing the cooling lines. Transmission shifts ok and the fluid was changed at 98142 miles but I noticed the old shop used Universal Syn ATF the fluid looks good.


I have had a computer diagnostic done by my mechanic with negative results. He also has cleaned the fuel injectors; the throttle body, the IAC and checked the plug gaps tested O2 sensors.


Any ideals?

Sounds like a torque converter problem. Like it isn't disengaging. If you put it in neutral does it still stall?

Stalling or slipping? Do this to insure the ATF level was checked correctly. Set the parking brake, start the engine, let it warm up, then shift through all the gears and shift into NEUTRAL. While the engine is still running, check the ATF level with the transmission's dipstick. If the engine is not running or if the transmission is in Park, the dipstick will register a lot more ATF than is actually correct. The engine must be running and your 32RH transmission MUST be in Neutral for an ATF level check.

If it is ever low, make sure to always add nothing but ATF+4. No other type of ATF will work properly. If it doesn't say ATF+4 in big letters on the front label, it's the wrong stuff. A low ATF level and adding the wrong type of ATF can cause all kinds of symptoms.

Since you said the old shop used atf and not atf+4, I would do a flush (there is a thread on here somewhere) with the correct atf+4 fluid. You will need to flush and not just drop the pan as you won't get it all out with a pan drop.

It will stall going from park to reverse. Twice it has stalled going into neutral.

Hopefully the problem is solved. Replaced the O2 sensor 139 code. Also after replacing the transmission cooling lines and topping off fluid levels and running the jeep around for several days the level dropped and needed more transmission fluid. Mechanic checked levels today after replacing sensor and level was ok. Jeep appears to be running okay.
