2004 LJ In Flux

Got this put together after dinner. I only had 1.75 .120 wall tubing so I used that instead of the 1.5., may be a blessing in disguise’s. Being round it finds it’s home way easier and seems stronger, and with a fixture should be easy to build. I’ll get my receiver recut tomorrow and will be testing this weekend.

I’ll be using the hitch for a bike rack and since there’s limited space in a Tj I’ll like to have a cargo basket if I need extra room.

I would assume that tube to be strong enough for any weight someone would pull with a TJ. I always wonder about welds though. I know they're strong, but I wonder how that would fair to the leveraged stress over time.

Sharkhide went well. I used the red surfacing wheel then went over it with a scotch brite to “smooth” the surface. Cleaned with acetone and sprayed with sharkhide. There is definitely a coating that’s way better then wax and if it doesn’t yellow it’s a win lol. Thanks @JpZombie. View attachment 559583View attachment 559585View attachment 559584

Looking good. I'd been recommended Sharkhide when I brought up my GR aluminum fenders having a lot of grit to be worked out. Concern raised was yellowing so keep us posted.

What grit and/or color scotch brite did you go with?

The red wheel that comes with the Eastwood surfacer and a 3M pad with a handle I got from lowes. The white pads do almost nothing. Whatever the green pad is did well and then I hit it with a white pad before the acetone.

The company says no yellowing so like you said time and Florida sun will tell. Lol

Thanks! Appreciate you sharing the tools.

I picked up a multi-pack of Scotch Brite pads.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LWTWCKY/?tag=wranglerorg-20

Those pads look like the 'white' pads so in the 1200-1500 grit equivalent.

The multi-pack has the maroon (360-400 grit) and Gray (800-1000 grit) on top of those white pads.

Appreciate you sharing so we can see the final product and the products that got it there.

I did all my savvy stuff with sharkhide years ago. It never yellowed.

Being in MN, do you drive in the winter? Have you seen the Sharkhide providing a protection from salt, etc? Not that it would rust, but does it deflect the environments/solvents from the road like a wax?

No, I park all vehicles except my truck in the winter. Nothing sees salt.

I’m not sure what sharkhide does but everything looks the same as when I installed it except lots of scratches.

Good info. I'm new to aluminum and curious on data points on Sharkhide. Boaters love, curious to see if it is a product for Jeeps.

Still need to get my own aluminum cleaned of grit (sweat, grease, etc) but I've already seen weather staining (but removed with a quick scotch brite pad — hopefully) so curious on protection over time in the salty regions.

Got my bumper installed with some fresh WRG recovery gear. With the front done I can concentrate on the rear. I have a tailgate skin that should be cut this week, if it fits well it will get same surface treatment the front bumper received.

The swayloc is amazing. Not many mods improve on and off road driving characteristics. I daily drive my jeep so this was well worth the extra expense.
