I purchased a 2005 Jeep TJ unlimited a year ago. The clock spring was busted, all the typical lights were on...... I replaced the clock spring with a new eBay version and all was well. I then purchased a re leather wrapped WJ wheel to go in the jeep. Shortly after installation of the new steering wheel my clock spring started making clicking noises. Eventually the clock spring failed and my dash is all lit up again with no cruise etc. I replaced the clock spring with another eBay version and immediately had the same issue, clicking and failing. So now, 6 months later, I got a clock spring from AutoZone, considerably more expensive. This install i was very careful. I mocked everything up, steering bolt was slightly loose, l left all the column covers off including the bag. I fired the jeep up and ran the wheel back and forth in park, all seemed good so i tightened up the wheel, put the column covers on and the airbag. As soon as I pulled out of my driveway it started clicking. I've watched 20 you tube videos on this so I'm basically a pro :). Now no matter what I do, like loosening the wheel bolt, it still clicks. I have been aligning everything just as I should, pulling the alignment pin out and installing as I should. Could the steering wheel be bad I wonder? I got rid of my old wheel, but I'm contemplating buying a used one and getting a new spring and seeing if this WJ wheel is messed up somehow. Thoughts? Anyone have this issue?

The clicking noise is often a sign that the clock spring is binding or being stressed in a way it shouldn't be, which could happen if the wheel is misaligned or if there are any issues with the wheel that affect the clock spring's movement.

Here are a few things you might want to consider:

Check the Steering Wheel: If you have access to another OEM steering wheel from a TJ or another compatible unit, it might be worth trying out. An old or damaged wheel could cause misalignment with the clock spring.

Inspect the Clock Spring: When installing the new clock spring, make sure it’s centered before you install it. If it's even slightly off-center, it can lead to premature failure or clicking noises.

Look at the Wiring: Sometimes, the wiring within the clock spring can also be the culprit, especially if it's being pinched when you install the steering wheel. Make sure all wires are free from any tension or obstruction.

Check Compatibility: Ensure that the WJ steering wheel is actually compatible with your TJ's clock spring setup. While they may seem similar, there could be slight differences that are causing this issue.
