Greetings all.
I've come here many times and read many threads but just now actually registered as a member because of current situation. As a computer professional I know my limits. Never try to be the SME (subject matter expert) in something your not. In this case mechanic or Jeep mechanic. I love my jeep and have done minor things here and there but nothing engine related myself per se. Barely has 86k all original still I babied this bad boy for years now so I figure is this when stuff starts failing?

So I hadn't drive my Jeep for couple weeks and when I tried to start it....well sure you can guess. Wouldnt start. All the lights turn on inside, dash lights, interior lights etc. But when I go to turn key, I barely hear a click. Not like multiple clicks as I've heard before and got a jump and voila! Nopers amigo....not this time.

So I started thinking...battery dead. Charged battery and put back in but no-go, got to talking to others and plus reading online.
So I started thinking...truly dead battery. Boughty new one. Installed, same issue. Turn key single "click" sound. All lights come one as usual still.
So I started thinking after reading online and asking friends. Bad alternator? Bought and installed new alternator. Still same exact single "click" noise when I turn key.
I always try to start in neutral since its manual shift.

I'm gonna try and have it jumped to see if it will start. This prolly sounds out of order huh?

Anyhow figured no better place than to ask here. Sorry for the story mode I just know its better to provide as much data as possible when trying to ask for help or suggestions.

Thank you all in advance.

...will DEF. read that. After all the searching I have done, I wonder why that result did not come up for me? Will post back anything new to report and will continue to read here. Thank you good sir.

Your clutch safety switch may have failed. There is a recall on them. You can either jumper the switch or put a fuse in the off road slot. I believe it's in the PDC under the hood for an 06. Mine is a Rubi, so it will override the clutch switch in 4L, therefore not sure of the fuse slot number.

Another possibility is the ignition actuator pin in the column if everything but the starter works.

ok so update. Again I'm a computer specialist, not a mechanic lol.

To recap.
Replaced battery before I came here to ask for suggestions, no start. Same one click-no start even after jumping.
Replaced alternator. Same one click-no start even after jumping.
Replaced battery cable. Same one click-no start even after jumping.
Going to replace the Starter tomorrow.

I get to thinking how this all started after letting my Jeep sit for like 3 weeks without an engine turn. Worked perfect before that, no issues. I'm learning a lot more about this bad boy than I ever knew he he he.

Thanx to all who have replied thus far. Will post update after I replace next piece to this puzzle.

Your clutch safety switch may have failed. There is a recall on them.

So Starter came, hooked it up, and still same result. One click no start. But one thing I could hear and my buddy couldnt was like a....humming super light hard sound....I know that doesnt sound right as i read it back.
But when I turn the key to turn on the jeep, clutch in..etc. I hear the one click(barely) but if I keep the key in and turned I hear real real low sound "Znnnnnn...znnnnnn...znnnnn" comes in 3 successions, but buddy said he couldnt really hear anything but I could hear it from inside since i'm in the driver seat.

So after checking power, he said there is no power getting to the starter fuse box.....if I'm saying that correctly, again ...computer specialist here...not mechanic. I respect you gear guys very much lol.

So next he said was the Clutch Safety Switch is down the line next to check......I told him someone here mentioned it as well. Trying this today.

I just got this feeling like...i'm gonna replace it and it wont the fix. High hopes for each piece. So first the battery, then the alternator, then the battery cable, then the Starter....now this clutch cable item is next. Times like this remind me of how I decided to focus on computers instead of mechanics.....

....comments, concerns, grudges, complaints....just reply so I can try and self educate and post back good sirs and ma'ams.

All you have to do is put the spare fuse in the off road slot to override the clutch safety switch.

No need to throw parts at it.

hey.....one last question b4 I pull trigger to buy. Does anyone know the exact part I need? Ok reading that back to me sounds like I dont know I'm ordering. I'm looking at this. IS this the correct type/model. Shows compatible with my 2006 jeep wrangler JT X. Sorry if anything seems redundant my techie side requires that i'm VERY sure of any part or device I buy.

"Standard Ignition 2 Terminal Clutch Switch - NS267"

Just now seeing this after I just posted below. You sound like how I would tell someone else when they buy all kinds of parts for their computer server or home computer when all it is a "re-seat" of a card or stick or RAM or NVME drive loose.

Thanx going to go try this right now.

Also, even if you're clutch switch is bad, don't go buy one.

There is a recall on the 06 clutch switch, dealer will install for free.

my off-road slot is empty, meaning even if I put a fuse in there, there are no clips inside to grab it. This normal? This was a dealership bought Jeep I've had since day one and drive it below normal I would think hence low miles on it. NE-how the recall on this was done already if I remember, wife took it in when I was out of state.

Sorry, I think that the off road slot is for the Rubi lockers.

Clutch Interlocking Ignition System (Non —
Rubicon Models Only)
Manual transmission vehicles are equipped with a clutch
interlock safety feature. With this feature engaged, you
must depress the clutch pedal to allow cranking of the
engine. To temporarily bypass this safety feature while
off-road driving (4L range only), which will allow cranking
the engine without depressing the clutch, follow
these steps:
1. Locate the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the
engine compartment. Refer to “Fuse Panel” in Section 7
of this manual. (See page 305 for more information.)
2. Put a 10 Amp fuse in the PDC cavity (#28) marked as
Clutch Override.
NOTE: A fuse is provided in fuseblock cavity (f19 or
f20) marked as Spare.

You can go to Jeep.com and see if the recall has been done to your VIN. Mine failed in the "good" position...

Yeah just went did my VIN and it pulled it up said mine is done and dated and all. But cant it go bad again?

Meant to say thank you, appreciate the time and replies.

ok back. I felt I owed it to explain what happened next since others took time out to help me. I REALLY wish I would have not viewed this issues as I do most computer problems. Its just that with tech things advance much fater than most other trades if not ALL trades.

Regardles the fix.......JKP "TJ Addict" made a comment about "ignition actuator". Well gues what! ! ! That wasnt is lol but it WAS in that same three part housing area. So there are like three parts and the one in the middle after the actuator that has a a plastic pin that turns.......if that makes sense, again i'm a computer security specialist, so I try to view things in similar realms. Yeah doesnt always work.

NE How thank you everyone, I truly honestly let me people know to come here and consider becoming a full member if you feel ongoing support would benefit your or simply to help out.

Not only did I break the the pin the plastic arm like piece that came out of the part so Iused both pieces to build one good part and after putting it all back together it started on the firs try!. Talk about excitment! Why you ask? lol

First I replaced battery, not the issue.
Replaced the negative battery cable that connected to or grounded to engine area , not the issue.
Replaced the Starter, not the issue
Replaced the Alternator/Solenoid, not the issue.
I Had friend who were electricians trace where power starts/ends etc...so they gave me an idea. And lot of the testing folks recommended here were tried by those of my friends who are more mechanicallly inclined that I. Like example....he did someething to the Alternator and a wrench and it got y engine to turn, didnt start, but it turned, so I was totally stoked. I was like "far out man!"

Ultimatelly ordering the part, then the part gets delayed WHY? Because it was during superbowl and it was stuck in shipping in Kansas City Chief town. My guess everyone took their day off lol.

TLDNR - Part was a simple part I ended up breaking and putting together with the original part and now everything works fine. I know I'm not the best at explaining myself so I apologize. Car trouble is my weak spot, depresses me lol

Thank you kindly gentlemen. If anyof you were closer I offered a hardkore discount on Computer related or Professional Tattoo work.🔥
