$3200 for a re-gear?

I welcome thoughts and criticism if I'm being too nitpicky

I've been debating on whether I want to do my own regear or have a shop do it. I had the shop I used once before quote me a new install and they're quoting $3200. Half of that is labor which baffles me. They're reputable and do good work, and I know between min wage increases and inflation they have to compensate, but when I was there four years ago the labor was $800 (still have my original quote). Last time I had them change carriers and spider gears for me along with the front and rear axles and I think it cost me $1400-1500 OTD. I don't know why they're tacking on all of these extra seals and bearings if the install kits include everything needed to do the regear. Maybe preventative maintenance while they're in there but that's something I can do on my own. Without all these extra bearings and seals, the OTD price comes out to about $2400, which is higher than I was hoping for but a little more reasonable. Labor might come down a tad too without all of the extra bearings and seals being installed.

Needless to say, I think I'll be doing this myself. Or am I being too unrealistic?

The price for that is ridiculously high. Why are they replacing rear axle bearings for a regear? That's 200 a pop for the bearings alone. $1500 for labor is ridiculous. Assuming a shop rate of $100/hr, they are saying it would take ~15 hours to do the job. It should not take a reputable shop even close to 15 hours to regear 2 axles. Last I remember getting quoted for a front and rear regear with master install kits and labor was in the 1200-1800 range.

I've had similarly priced quotes in my region. My theory is that they get lots of RFQs and eventually there'll be someone who will pay those prices.

If i had a drive way, im not even talking about garage with a work bench and all the tools, simply a drive way where i can do all the acrobatics under the Jeep without bothering anyone or being bothered, i would do the job myself without the hesitation.
Favorite beer, good music, ATTENTION TO DETAILS, finish the job over the weekend and be happy. It is not a difficult job, simply requires attention and patience.

For reference, in 2019 for labor alone i paid $700 and $850 for rear and front respectively

I paid $1,160 for a regear at Absolute Offroad in North Phoenix in 2019. Total included parts and labor. I'd be curious to know what their price is now.

What is this, NTJC? I have no issue with Dallas Offroad, but the number of people around NTX who knee-jerk recommend them for putting air in the tires or changing headlights is just insane. But I shouldn't care how other people spend their money. Good for DOR for having found a way to print money.

Although I'm not sure why they needed to break CJ/YJ/TJ/XJ/JL/JT into 4 line items all for the same price, but I'm super surprised they didn't just make the JK be the same price, knowing full well nobody would question it. Why is it $500 cheaper?? Regardless, that's consistent with the quote I got from them last year for a regear.

I wasn't recommending them, I've never even been there. Just posting some comparable pricing for the OP.
 
I could be miss reading thier quote, but it looks like they are charging for the full Rev master kit, then also charging for all of the bearings and seals. Which are in the master kit. Labor is what it is.
 
What's the shop rate nowadays for offroad shops? These quotes for +$1000 labor for regears is insane to me. Its like they are just charging labor willy nilly.
 
I think my regear was initially quoted at $1600. That said, it was closer to $9k before I was all in all done. Regear was $1600. I think the air lockers were about $3500. I think the compressor and the switch pad were about $1700 (switch pro). Sway-Loc was another $850. Then there was the additional labor. Maybe the regear was a loss leader.
