I have read somewhat related posts of this happening due to the jeep sitting... I don't think that applies.
The short story, I was visiting a friend on the Oregon coast. I pulled the jeep 4 down and all was cool. A few days into the trip I smelt something and found transmission fluid (pink) on the exhaust, skidplate, etc.. I checked the transmission fluid level was and full. I decided to continue to drive and watch the level... The level continues to be fine and its not leaking...
I assume there is ATF in the transfer case, so I am going to check that level today and clean it all up so I can detect any new leak. I will certainly fill if its low and am considering if I should drain and fill. Advise please.
I have read that if the transmission is overfilled, it will leak out a pressure relief hole... that seems to be a possibility but why all of a sudden after owning the jeep for 2 years.
What I probably should do is to have the tranny checked out and fluid/filters changed... baseline the transmission/t-case and probably have someone knowledgeable do it otherwise I will still be left to wonder... Unfortunately, I haven't found a good mechanic and have had near fatal experience using guys work out of their shop...
I hate to add gas to this fire... but I believe I should be able to put the t-case in neutral and the transmission in park and tow... but I have to leave both in neutral so I am fearing something is messed up.
