2004 rubi currently at 440k miles ..
5.13 on 33s... trans rebuild less than 10k and torque converter is slipping throwing tcc code and overheating . Shop added trans cooler yesterday and said drive it and see how it goes as they have reset the light due to p0700 and p0740 if it comes back they will warranty the converter.

There seems to be an issue with the shift to overdrive as it's delayed causing the slipping ... rebuild was due to loosing overdrive and limp mode.
Before the rebuild I drive it 126k miles with a delayed shift to over drive and the last 2 yrs the rpm would jump up 500 as it shifted into overdrive .currently there is between 500 and 750 rpm difference in on the gas and off the gas in overdrive

So the question is .. is there a valve body that would fix this slow shift or does the shop need to address this under warranty as I'm thinking it's not suppling enough pressure to the overdrive circuit

I have researched and found the correct rpm at highway speed is around 2350 or 2650 i think ... could be off but i know im higher at over 3k so I'm sure it's spinning fast enough to supply enough pressure from the trans pump

I had planned to do the cooler anyway .. but considering the current issue I let them do it for 250 so they don't call it into question for warranty because I did it

Overdrive kicks in around 30-35 unless on the gas so I'm keeping it off riding in town trying to prevent making it worse .. at least until we figure out why the mustang dies at random then I'll see about warranty on the converter and valve body if it will fix the slow shift .... sorry so long thanks in advance

I used individual Torque Converter parts from Sonnax when I rebuilt my Transmission and valve body. It looks like they offer a whole Valve Body but I don't know if it has all the magic already worked. I also did this in conjunction with a wranglerfix PCM and have better shifts between Lock and unlock on the converter. Wranglerfix has a new program that I need to send off for. May talk with your transmission professional about the options. Sonnax makes a whole mess of parts for the 42RLE. I can't even recall everyhing I did without going back to referance.

Well thanks for the replies .. was hoping fir more info so I'll just roll the dice at the trans shop ... was sure after 20 yrs someone here would have some idea oh well thanks anyway

A transgo kit may be helpful-

I went Billet TC and pistons (vs factory plastic)- got excellent results.

440k is a haul- jeep still looks good man.

Sorry we were unable to meet your needs for free expertise.

I appreciate it .. I know autos are strange voodoo .. if not I wouldn't need to ask.. manuals are simple but for 5 k I didn't really care.. od shift has been an issue since I got it

Thanks .. it lived in Alaska for 275k of the 304 it had when I bought it .. frame, body mounts and floors are perfect

Hey Brian.
I know you’ve said the shop will warranty the converter, did they actually replace it when you had the trans rebuilt.
With your difference in RPM on and off the gas in overdrive, I’d be looking at the converter first. I’m by no means any book of knowledge on lock up auto’s, but that would be my logical first thought. 🤷‍♂️

Hey Andy.
Have you got any more info on the billet torque converter you are using, that would be a very interesting upgrade. Probably contributes to a lot less heat build up as well I’m guessing.
Cheers.

I’ll be more than happy to talk to my mechanic and give you the source- We also got rid of the plastic shift pistons and used billet pistons-

You have to give things a little bit of time to break in but within a few hundred miles I realized that he had really improved on the transmission- It never feels firm but it certainly doesn’t have the soft factory mushy feel. It is the only TJ with the 42 RLE transmission I’ve ever driven that felt this good.

At first I was disgusted that I had to do it - after I did it I was so glad.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate the feedback.
I’ve recently managed to get myself a second TJ (2x red 2005’s now), this one is stock and automatic. I want to keep it pretty much this way other than a few mechanical upgrades.
Some of the few things I’d like to do is the transmission pan with temp gauge, a cooler and a wranglerfix PCM. A new torque converter is a strong consideration also, they can make such a difference to the way the vehicle drives.

I had no idea where things were going- Mine just clicks through every gear so perfect and crisp.

Granted the transmission was not performing correctly before but I’ve got another TJR with the same transmission, bone stock , and it doesn’t hold a candle .

I have a message into him.

They said it was included in the rebuild
