Have a 2005 with 4.0L and 42rle. In past month have gotten codes P0700 and P1776. Took to local transmission shop to have checked out. They said transmission shifts good but they are reading codes P0944 (loss of hydraulic pump prime) and P0218 (high temp operation activated). They suggest a full rebuild. I asked that with those codes would a transmission flush be beneficial. There response was "that would be worse thing to do, it would clean out all the nooks/crannies and make issue worse". This is where I'm confused, if you're losing pump prime it could be getting gunked up, same with high temp code could not have good flow. Even the code I got (P1776) is the solenoid switch valve sticking. Now it is a Mom/Pop shop thats been in business for 40 years and has great rep, its not a franchise shop. Any thoughts????

Common claim. I don’t think transmissions go out from fluid changes. I think they were going to go out anyway, but when the shop does the fluid change the customer blames the shop and it becomes a big debacle so shops stay away from fluid changes.

Does the CEL Go away when you unplug the battery and drive normally, iirc my jeep had some other codes that included the high temp mode and it would essentially put my jeep in limp mode, with that said I would unplug my batter and my jeep would drive perfectly
After reading up on other threads turns out it was my Pcm and replaced it with a unit from WranglerFix,been fine ever since I even put a tune on it despite the fact that "you can't tune a wrangler fix pcm" it's just for the companies sake to protect themselves which I respect and understand!

so when the CEL came on it was the P0700 & P1776 codes and it did put the tranny in "limp mode". I was able to erase the codes and I read up on the codes. It was good for 2 weeks and than happened again. I erased codes again, got into the transmission shop 1-1/2 weeks later and its now been over 2 weeks without doing it again. So when the shop looked at it the CEL wasn't on and they pulled 2 different codes. I have read up on Wranglerfix.com about changing Pcm, but is there a way to "test" to make sure that these codes are caused by bad Pcm or is it really just a $700 stab in the dark?

Let me ask you, does your jeep drive "not normal" when you have no CEL ? Or does it drive poorly regardless of having a CEL or not?
Simply erasing the codes with a scanner didn't work for me,I had go physically disconnect the battery for my jeep to drive normally,it got bad enough to the point that I had to do it everytime before I started to drive.....and them my pcm came in 😁

I can't tell you a direct answer cause I don't want to be the reason that you to spend 728 bucks just for it to end up just being the tranny,I'm just trying to help with explaining what happened go me&others. but I will say that I'm sure that it could be your Pcm from what your telling me!

both times CEL came on with P0700/P1776 codes it put transmission in "limp mode". Erasing codes made "limp mode" go away, never had to disconnect battery. I did email Mark from wranglerfix.com this morning. I'm just wondering if with the 2 codes I got and the 2 that the shop got if that's a tell-tale sign of PCM being/going bad?

This is my shocked face.

yeah, I was hoping it being a Mom/Pop shop that has great rep and been around for almost 40 years that they might have come back with a different solution, but it also didn't really surprise me either.

I don't know nearly as much about the 42RLE, but there are a series of pressure tests that can be done prior to removing the transmission. I get the impression that nobody does these tests (including me, but that's because I'm not comfortable running the jeep at 30 mph while on jack stands, while underneath it getting a pressure reading), but it might give a better warm and fuzzy to be able to say something like "ok you need 60psi at the accumulator but you only have 15psi" instead of just saying "customer says it doesn't work right, rebuild advised." I'd rather know why it wasn't working, and what specific set of repairs corrected the condition. But maybe I've got too much scientist in me, and not enough businessman.

The 0700 is a generic 'transmission issue' code.
It doesn't really tell you anything.
1776 is solenoid switch. Not that hard to replace.

yeah I looked into how hard it would be to swap out solenoid valve, but whats your take on the hydraulic pump prime and high temp codes?

Check the wiring harness on the driver and passenger side for rubbed/chaffed wiring.

I found a rubbed wire on the passenger side of mine and repaired it and no more codes!!!!!

Mine was right above the sensor and that's where it rubbed and was messing it up.

Not the best picture but that's where mine rubbed
