Can anyone verify that this will fit a TJ? ATS says it does fit.

2003-2006 Jeep 4.0L / 2007-2011 Jeep3.8L ATS Jeep jk transmission, torque converter, trans cooler and co-pilot trans controller. Has less than 1,000 miles on it until the Jeep was totaled out. I had only ran amsoil fluid in it. Buy brand new for over $4,000.

That's interesting, as the bell housing should be different between the JK 3.8L and a TJ 4.0-L, right? Like if its a JK transmission, its not going to bolt up to a TJ...even though they are the "same" transmission.

The bellhousing is different. I suspect that there are other differences as well, potentially gear ratios.

I don't know but it seemed like a good price for a ATS trans so if someone is interested they can call ATS and find out?

Unless someone makes an adapter it’s not going to fit a TJ. I say that because that bellhousing doesn’t look like it’s removable.

if you look closely at the bellhousing bolt holes, you'll see two different patterns drilled in the casting. I'm not saying it for sure fits, and don't really have that much of an idea of what the bolt pattern looks like on either engine, just noting my observation.

I believe the 42RLE only had one set of ratios as well. I had thought previously about the possibility of swapping the OD if something else had something closer to a 0.8, but the thing about autos is they change ratios by reassigning the input and output to different components in a planetary set, so you can't really change one ratio without changing 2 others.

The only reason I am sure about it is because I was reading old threads and someone attempted to put a JK 42RLE on a TJ and they said it didn't work because the bellhousing wouldn't mate up to the 4.0.

As for the ratios, you may be right. I'll bet @mrblaine will know for sure. He has to have encountered this at some point

that'd look sexy with a pea green 205 hangin off it. o_O i saw that earlier.

Was it just a random 42RLE or specifically one from ATS? My comment was based on the possibility that ATS could get housings cast to allow for interoperability that the original factory transmissions didn't have.

It was just a random one. You’d have to call ATS to verify, but you may be onto something there.

@Wildman that is a JK transmission with ATS' own trans controller ("co pilot" as described in the ad) that interrupts the signal from JK PCM and replaces it with it's own. It won't bolt up to the 4.0 since ATS diesel just rebuilds cores with their internals.

The guys ad said it fit a TJ too. So I figured I'd take a chance and post it here. I'm not in any way knowledgeable of the 42RLE.

I have a ATS built 42RLE in mine. I talked to them and gathered all the information before I ordered. From what I learned, the JK one with the co-pilot is incompatible with the TJs. The bell housing doesn't fit the 4.0. The seller is very likely guessing but that's quite common 🙂

Bummer. Would have been a good score for someone here.

I think the JK uses a variable rate pump to soften shifts and reduce drag so there's more than just the bolt pattern. I don't know if the variable rate is mechanical or computer controlled. Funny thing is the transgo kit does the exact opposite, raises the system pressure to firm up the shifts.

@psrivats - How was you experience with ATS? I am considering them for a replacement 42RLE in my 2006 TJ Rubicon. I’be been talking with Adair about the Stage 1 option. Need to pull the trigger soon. It’s between ATS and Best Buy Transmissions. Thanks for your input!

Not very positive. Would recommend you to find a local trusted shop if you can.

Ok. Thanks for the heads up.
Just to give an alternative point of view, I’ve had ATS build two trannys for me and I’ve had great luck with them. The first was a 42RLE which I ran behind a supercharged I6 - no problems at all and I beat the hell out of that thing.

The second is a 545RFE built for 700 horsepower, which I run behind my 392 Hemi. No issues there either. I also beat the hell out of this one, and trust me when I say the Hemi makes some hell.

Both tranny’s are crazy smooth, and ATS does a bunch of work on them to beef them up. I for one am quite happy with them and would definitely use them again.
