I need some help with videos/resources to understand my 4WD. I keep reading the linkage is the easiest thing to work on but I feel like the basics are skipped in everything I find. I’m also not sure what verbiage I need to search to get the results I want.

When I got the jeep, we didn’t realize it wasn’t shifting into 4WD. I know how to test that now. It’s not changing no matter where I put it.

Hubs got under and I shifted it, and he was watching for the linkage (?) to move. To the right of the linkage there was a small bar that looked popped out of place. He stuck it back in. After he did that, I couldn’t move the

I’m trying to upload the video. But I keep getting a message that says oops we’re having trouble right now. Is there a file size limit for these threads?

The site will no longer allow video uploads.

You'll need to host it somewhere else, like Youtube, and link it here.

The video doesn't show much of the lever on the transfer case. Is that lever moving completely and firmly into each of the four positions?

No it’s not. It will not go into neutral or 4L at all.

But also what am I supposed to be looking at? 😅

if it makes you feel better oops havibg trouble right now is me everyday .... You just might need to get the linkage freed up with some lube. Spray grease or something like that. Also easy to adjust you will figure it out.

As you move the cab shift lever into each position the lever on the transfer case should also click into another position. There are 4 distinct positions for that lever on the transfer case and you can feel them as they click into place. You should also have a yellow "Part Time" light on the dash when in 4WD.

I need to get more basic here. What does the linkage look like? I’m still confused on what I’m looking for. And what was the pin thing that had popped out of place?

So before hubs put that pin piece back into place I could move the cab lever to all four positions. But no light on the dash for any. After that pin piece went back into place the cab lever will only go in 2H and the. It clunks loudly into 4H

That was a cross bar shaft that the linkage moves on. The factory linkage leaves a lot to be desired which is why a lot of us install after market cable shift kits. The factory linkage uses a long rod fastened to the transfer case lever with a 13mm adjusting bolt that has a habit of slipping and getting out of adjustment. The design is convoluted to say the least as it is an attempt to change the direction of the throw thru a crazy "U turn" setup that only works smoothly under the best of conditions. I suspect yours may be frozen or bent and pushing on it to try and force it probably is what dislodged the cross bar.

If you decide to go with a cable kit all of that crap goes away and it will shift smooth as butter. Meanwhile if you can't get the linkage to work, and you want to test your 4x4, you can unhook the linkage and crawl underneath with channel locks (engine off brake set!) and shift the transfer case using the channel locks on the transfer case shift lever. From 2WD, 1 click to 4HI, next click is N and last click is 4LO.
