$8.50 recovery rings

I've never used one of these, but it does seem like they'd be a solution, under certain situations. Have you used these in you escapades?

Not this particular brand but a small handful of generic Amazon ones. They're all about the same size, different colors.

For $8 I ordered two. I usually keep 4 in my Jeep.

The notable feature of the Factor 55 ones is rubber or silicone teeth that hold the rope in the ring.

Just not worth the cash IMHO.

Can be quite a PIA rigging up four plus pulleys/rings and getting everything set right.

At that price I ordered a couple to throw into the recovery bag. My guess is they'll be fine for the short pullsI do.

$8 Chinesium, almost guaranteed not to be made of whatever they claim it is or to have ever been tested to the strength it's labeled for...is it just me that feels nervous about using this in recovery equipment?

It's solid "aluminum."

Not a lot of things to go wrong.

I've used and abused three different cheap Amazon sourced rings and they're fine enough.

No moving parts, motors, engines or anything I'm worried about.

I don't think you are looking at it realistically. The ring isn't holding the lines together. If in the unlikely scenario the ring were to crumble to dust, your winch rope is still looped through the soft shackle which isn't the case if a snatch block breaks.

My two arrived today. Exactly the same size as the rest of my Amazon collection. The finish feels slightly grainy which is concerning, since the others are glass smooth.

Trick question. How did they come up with a 33,000 lb WLL?

Trick question. How did they come up with a 33,000 lb WLL?

A. It was printed on the other ones they made for Rhino not USA.

B. It was more than the competitors 25,000 so they went with it. Kind of like 1/3 lbs burgers not selling well to 1/4 burgers because people are complete idiots.

C. Someone looked up the specification of the aluminum they thought they were purchasing, did some quick back of the napkin math and came up with a reasonable number then divided it in half, and handed it to management, who promptly multipled that number by 4.

D. All of the above.

I love the CE stamp. It's a few pixels from the European consumer protection group...meets none of the standards and goes by Chinese equivalent.

With option C in mind, does the Safety Thimble have a WLL?

That's a @mrblaine question.

My guess is the lab tests and engineering would set you back a fair chunk of change.

What is carrying the load, the ring/thimble or the rope/soft shackle?

Or to rephrase the question, what is the compressive failure load of the aluminum? What does it take to smash and smear the aluminum bearing material between two typical synthetic ropes used in off road recovery?

For some reason, I've been itching to buy something on Amazon today for some reason. Boredom from recovering from my hip revision surgery? I think I'll have to pick a couple of these up to carry in the jeep. There's also a deal on Amazon for a Radioddity dB 20 gmrs mobile with the gm 30 ht combo for $108.

Thimbles don't have a WLL due to the simple fact that they are not carrying the load, the rope is. Same as that pulley ring, the WLL is ridiculous in that it has zero meaning. You would have to demonstrate somehow that the rope which will fit in the groove is capable of exerting enough force to collapse or alter the shape of the ring which isn't possible. It is a a bullshit number designed purely to appeal to specification collectors.

As you know, it's nearly (if not completely) impossible to keep 100% of people from using a product the wrong way. I'm not sure I can picture why anyone would, but I can picture somebody running two ropes through the center of one of these and using it like a shackle.

My concern with the price has more to do with what kind of coating or surface issues might present themselves where it rubs on rope, something I might not have even thought about except for your Warn fairlead theead. Then Mac commented about it feeling more grainy than his other ones.
