Hey everyone!
I posted this yesterday actually and now both my account and the thread seem to have been deleted/ missing idk so I'm going to post again as I had some great responses!
I have a 98 Tj with a 4.0 and I'm
Just starting a few months ago I have bee having some troubles with steering, it will dart left and right when driving about 60-100kmh as if it is finding ruts in the road. However sometimes I can get it to drive perfectly straight. This "was" my daily driver and I do very limited off-roading, mostly driving through fields checking pivots and such
My lift is a 4" rough country (I know) x-flex short arm lift, I bought a adjustable front rack bar and a dual steering stabilizer when I installed the lift in 2016, reason for the rough country is I was working part time during high school and couldn't afford anything else.
I did install a drop track bar bracket at the same time as the drop pitman arm, which from my reading of other forums it seems to be the consensus that drop pitman arms are a no-no. So I have been debating removing said pitman arm and drop bracket.
I have replaced one control arm "flex joint" basically just a cheap
johnny joint in the last two months during this whole search, and i went around with a prybar to check for play in a lot of components both front and rear axle. could the rear axle have anything to do with it?
When the steering issues started I believed my TRE were the culprit as they were OEM as far as I knew, so I replaced the entire drag link, tie rod assembly with a rugged ridge(?) setup.
I then had it aligned with no change in behaviour
I then chased any components i could find slight issue with, replaced the ball joints, wheel bearings, and steering box; with no change in steering behaviour.
it was mentioned i should do a dry steering test, which i will do later this afternoon when i have some assistance,
it was also recommended i check for any bends or dents in my wheel tire setup, which is a 15x10 (cant remember offset) wheel with 33x10.5R15 wrangler duratrac tires.
I have noticed when driving at about 30kmh, I took the doors off and hung out the side and watched my wheel and it will "flutter" left to right every so often with no movement/ feeling in the steering wheel. not sure if its always done that?
I forgot to mention too that I have begun to notice it will steer left or right when a hard acceleration or braking occurs, which from my reading I thought was related to the dropped pitman arm.
You guys are awesome! hopefully I can find something in my steering test! ill post some photos of the front end and hopefully my account and this thread don't get deleted again!
