A rebuild of #miRustyJeep...

Getting a set of 35” Baja Boss AT’s installed on my truck next month. I’m curious to see how much weight they need to balance them.

My Boss mud terrains are pretty good without being balanced.

How heavy are they considered to the Goodyear MT/R's? I'm thinking the Bajas are my next tire when the MT/R's wear out

Funny you say that. Discount refuses to install them because of that and they are unwilling to go against their computer.

The truck was equipped from the factory with 129 tires which is rated at 4,078 or something close to that.

The tires I’m getting are 126’s rated at 3,748.

My rear axle rating is the higher of the two and it’s rated for 6,800. Last I checked 2 x 3,748 = 7,496 lbs which is > than 6,800 so my tires aren’t the limiting factor.

Plus even though the duratracs that came on it were called “35’s” they were more like 34’s. The bosses are listed at 35.2” tires and they are a half inch wider.

In my quest to not let my cheapness ruin my enjoyment of the Jeep...I pulled the trigger today on 4 new Baja Boss MT's in 35 x 12.5 -17 Load Range D (lowest offered in this size). Not to totally leave the dutchy-ness behind, they have a rebate going on right now for 25 bucks a tire. This will be the VERY first time I've had all 4 new tires on the Jeep...EVER! They are eye-wateringly expensive (just under 1500 for 4), but all tires are expensive now. I hope they are as good as everyone says they are. Since I've switched to balance beads, I'll mount them myself...or at least Try. We'll see how it goes. I'll have to buy a couple levers...but its a skill I think would be good to learn. I also need to rotate my wheels around, since I found that I damaged one of them somewhere, somehow. Gotta put the spare into one of the Mickey's and take the damaged wheel to my spare (and dismount the good rubber and sub on the worst of the 5 Generals so I can sell my old ones). Unintended consequence of the upgrade is that I'll save about 5 lbs a corner in tire weight....the Mickeys are about 70 lbs and the General X3 are 76, I think!

I also purchased a new Mopar IAC. Been fighting my idle for a while, and it all points back to the IAC (I've "fixed" it a couple times now). Last trip, I had some hot start issues that may also be related, so I just decided to buy one. I've never had vaporlock issues in this Jeep before, so I'm leaning more toward the IAC than anything else.

I think you’ll like the Boss’s, and just sub $1500 for 4 is a good deal. I was looking at closer to $1800 several months ago and I couldn’t justify that price. I’ve yet to get my rebate from MT for my Legends and is a PITA to try to get it now.

It's insane how expensive everything has gotten. I used to not think twice about a purchase for the Jeep. Now I do!

Yeah. Things have gotten ridiculous. Not to get political...but I sure hope a change in regime is coming. Can't keep printing money like we are.

Heat soak? Have you checked the #3 Injector?

Checked it for what? I replaced my injectors a couple years ago, and installed the DEI insulation kit. It sure felt like a vapor issue issue though. I also had to buy VERY VERY EXPENSIVE gasoline from a station that was a bit off the beaten path, so It possible that I got some old stuff.

I meant the DEI insulation kit, so it's not that then.

While I don't particularly like any of my voting options I am always going to vote against the fools that fuck up this state getting a chance at the white house!

It’s hard to believe a free and fair election is possible when requiring voter ID is now illegal.

Another little project I’ve been picking away at here and there is tailgate armor. I’ve had the aluminum for a bit now and been ciphering a way to make the openings clean. I’m not great with the hand tools, and the shop is too busy for me to interrupt with a little personal project like this. I settled on using my 3d printer to make a template that I can follow with a patterning bit in my router. Took a few tries to get the radio and locations correct, but it’s a LOT cheaper to print this template multiple times vs making 5 or 6 tailgate panels, lol.

I made a “zero” corner and lined everything up off that.

Next step is to cut an undersize opening close to the correct position, then use my router and pattern to true up the edge. Then I’ll size the aluminum on my table saw (or maybe use the router again) and drill for mounting screws.

Oh! Tires showed up today too!

Should just buy the sunny side up panel and save yourself the headache.
 
Had to try the template, and I think it worked pretty well. My initial hole for the lock cylinder was just ever so slightly off and scuffed the lower edge of the hole, which sucks, but overall it’s pretty good. I’ll throw a small round over or chamfer on the edges and it will disappear.

I very much admire your willingness to make the tailgate armor yourself. With the price of material and the amount of time I'd waste studying the problem, doing it myself would only prove to be an exercise in frustration!
