Anytime I've ever day hiked the Grand Canyon solo, especially on the less traveled trails, I've always taken steps in case I had a problem. I would tell my wife my plans and where I'd park the truck. If she didn't hear from me by a certain time, she would call the rangers, and tell them where my truck was parked.
On the dash of my locked truck I would leave an envelope with "itinerary" written on it. I always figured anyone in law enforcement could open the truck if necessary. In the envelope I'd detail my route, turn around point, clothing, equipment, etc.
I was doing this way before cell phones and thankfully it was never necessary.
Now I hike with a Personal Locator Beacon and my wife is glad.
