Hi guys, just looking for some advice on buying a used winch. I've never owned a winch before, anything I should look for or test when buying other than connecting it up to a battery and making sure it works? 2 on the local classifieds have caught my eye, a Warn CE XD9000 ($500) and a Warn 8274 ($400)(Canadian dollars).

Also, I'm looking to mount to stock bumper, is it difficult to mount the 8274? Seems like you need a $300 mount plate from Warn to do it.

The 8274 is the cats ass of winches. It's completely serviceable, and all parts are available to rebuild it. The only downfalls are that it's a big heavy winch, and it takes a special winch plate.

Both are great winches but the 8274 takes a special 8274 winch mount. Either would be a great choice but the 8274 has an especially outstanding cachet

Speaking of used winches, I picked up an 8274 yesterday. It needs a new lower housing (got dropped off the back of a truck, or the PO broke it trying to remove one of the mount bolts), but everything else seems in good order

Plus the 8274 will make people think this guy

Plus the 8274 will make people think this guy has been around and really knows his $hit when it comes to winches. No one would ever think this guy has never owned a winch before. 😁

That 8274 looks heavy! Is it possible to switch over to synthetic rope to lighten it up a bit? Just curious...

Of course but that weight difference wouldn't be significant when all things are considered. That said I'd still switch to a 3/8 synthetic. I went through 3 wire ropes due to kinked/broken strands in a couple years caused by multiple pulls some days when there was no chance to respool it evenly. Made the switch to synthetic and no more problems. Synthetic holds up very well to hard use with reasonable care.

I'd say it's gotta be 100-120 lbs.
Loaded with steel cable perhaps but not empty.

Fyi the weight difference from 125ft of steel with a steel hook to 125ft of synthetic with an aluminum thimble is probably close to 30 or 40lbs. It's not insignificant but in the grand scheme of a 4500lbs jeep it's not much. Switch if for all the other great reasons to run synthetic if they matter to you, but not bumper weight. On my 8274 I run synthetic and will never go back. But the only part that weight plays in that is the weight of pulling it up a hill behind you.

There must have been a time
when we could have said no.

Yeah, when I picked mine up it had a full spool of cable on it, and was mounted to a heavy hitch mount. It felt quite a bit lighter after I removed the cable and mount.

I will eventually switch to synthetic, but it's not a top priority right now.

125' of 5/16" wire rope is right at 24.5 lbs. My 100' of 5/16" wire rope weighed just under 20 lbs. 125' of 3/8" synthetic is 4.25 lbs.

For just the ropes there is a 20 lb. difference between the original 125' of 5/16" and 125' of 3/8" synthetic.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I picked it up last night. Now to get it mounted... I don't want to pay almost another $400 for the Warn mounting plate.
