Aussie TJ prices are coming down!

Still a rip off compared to prices 3-4 years ago. I bought mine with 60,000 less km's on it, rust free etc, for 8000 aud. At that time worse examples could be found for 4-5k. Now these days you're lucky to find one under 10k, like that one. I'm not sure its just covid any more too, I think they're just appreciating - I've seen JK's going for less than TJ's with some for sale around the place for 10-11k, and some TJ's are selling for over 20k now. Bit ridiculous really

I’ve noticed around where I live a similar trend. The asking prices for TJs are high with COVID, but it seems a clean TJ brings more than a “comparable” clean JK almost every time where I’m at. Good news for us TJ owners 🤷‍♂️ .

Yes I was way too selective when I was looking and prices were around $5-$7K max pre Covid in the end I had to pay $8000 for a stock I could have got for much less and be first at the door just to get one! now even 97-98,s are being advertised for 10-12k and low mileage as you say over 20k but I mentioned in another thread that now petrol has started to go up we will see a few more come back down in price. 9K ono for an 06 is showing prices are coming down but they will never go back to pre covid prices in the near future because so many paid way over the top already.

I blame the Superannuation pay out of 2 lots of 10k so close to each other for the price hikes! four out of my 9 team members claimed the super hardship release even though they were still working full time and spent it on 4x4,s and mods, Tax Department has plenty of time to catch up with them for false declarations along with the over 500,000 pax that falsely claimed the up to 20k pay-outs last June and July.

Aussie superannuation I think is like US 401k? Everyone in Australia has to pay through employers 10% of their earnings into a pension fund that cant be touched until retirement.

Clicked this thread thinking that Aussie Lockers (now under Torq-Masters) were dropping in prices...

Disappointed that is not the case - because I love my front diff Aussie and would love more folks having an opportunity for a reasonable priced front locker.

Happy for those of you down-under for access to more affordable TJs!

I'll ask a question which might go against the hive.

1.) What kind of wheeling do you do? Hard tracks (coffs, victoria, etc...) or Touring / Camping?
2.) Based on that how does the TJ do?
3.) In the mecca of 70 series, 80 series, 105 series, GU's, W460's, D90/110's, etc... why the TJ?

I'll be the first to admit, if LHD 70's (75/76/78/79) were easily available here or I could get a GU Patrol - probably would do so over the LJ. Full disclosure I'm a big Toyota fan (daily is a Toyota I've built with 70 series aesthetics). The appeal of simple reliable diesels is massive but thanks to California and CAFE it will never happen.

So how does the "cheap jeep" stand against the rest of the crowd down there?

The ole Tele track / Cape York is on my bucket list along with the gnarly Victoria high country stuff. Not sure how I can pull it off, but I'm determined!

ETA: the LJ was never imported correct?

If you don''t mind Ill chime in too

1. I wouldn't say I only tackle hard tracks but I do aim to tackle the hardest ones I can (i mainly wheel in toolangi, cobaw, vhc)
2. The TJ is a weapon off road compared to landcruisers and patrols, mainly just because they're so much lighter and have so much more flex, the 4.0 helps too as it puts out more power and torque than a lot of diesels. I go wheeling with a group of landcruisers/hiluxes and im always pulling them out.
3. why the TJ? Just love a shorty 4wd, and going doorless/topless is a huge bonus. Always wanted a jeep since I was young so bought one as soon as I could when I turned 17.

Jeeps dont have the best reputation here in terms of reliability but a lot of people would still admit they're still probably the most capable 4wd's. I've found my TJ very reliable and capable so I'd say it stacks up very well against the crowd, quite an underrated rig here. The biggest downfall of the TJ is the lack of space/carrying capacity which is probably a big reason why jeeps arent more popular, because our 4wding locations are very remote so typically people need to/like to pack a lot of stuff

and yes the LJ was never brought over here.

Just to add on reliability! If you use correct parts and maintenance there is no issues, too many want to cheap out on maintenance over mods, there are plenty of jeep/ USA 4x4 specialists in Australia that are not regular Chain service providers who have years of knowledge and experience. I agree with space issues though but its easy overcome by culling you comforts which doesnt really lead to an unprepared trip more minimal all ya need.
TJ,s are like Harleys you can buy anything and everything anywhere in the world. Two Peas in a pod :)
