Question for the group. I have a ‘97 with the 2.5l five speed that has run perfectly until today. While driving home from work I blip the throttle to rev match as I dropped down a gear and I get a backfire through the exhaust. Still drove fine. No CEL. No codes. Idles fine. Accelerates fine. Starts fine. Only does it when I blip the throttle. what the heck is going on?

Unburned fuel in the exhaust (cat / muffler) that ignites. Apparently blipping the throttle is causing too much fuel that is not burned in the combustion chamber.

Thanks. That makes sense. I guess my next question is why it’s never done it in the last year since I bought it. Something has to have changed and I don't want to just throw money at it randomly since my diagnostic skills are lame at best.

My 4.0 did it. Cracked header. Not all the exhaust was getting to the O2 sensor so the PCM said more fuel. MPGs went back to high 13s from 9s.
