Bad input shaft bearing? Bad transmission?

Greetings,

I’ve got a 98 Jeep TJ 5spd (no lift kits, very standard jeep but good-looking) with about 137k on the dash that has a loud whirring/metallic noise when the clutch is engaged in neutral.

It all began about 2 months ago when my jeep popped out of first gear. I thought it was a fluke until it began to happen more frequently and around the same time, the loud whirring noise began. It happened when accelerating in gears 2 and 3, but dissipates in gear 4.

I avoided 1st gear for starts for a while and used 2nd gear only. The noise remained but didn’t worsen until now. Last night, on my journey from Boston, MA to Florida, I kicked the jeep into 5th gear and cruised at 85mph for a bit. Suddenly, the loud noise began and it was worst this time. Way worse. So loud that I could hear it with my AirPods on while playing music. I quickly shifted out of 5th and into neutral to get into 4th but I couldn’t at first. The jeep wouldn't let me. I finally was able to and pulled over at a rest stop.

Now the following day, I’m stuck outside of Trenton, NJ at my wits end. After doing research and watching videos on end, my best guess is that I have a bad input shaft bearing and not a bad transmission entirely. I want it to be the former. I don't have the financial resources to deal with a bad tranny.

In the event that it is a bad input shaft bearing, it would be wise to replace the clutch and company since it's right there.

I understand that I could be mistaken on all of this as I am new to the jeep community and am no expert.

If I could get some advice/expertise on this that would be greatly appreciated.

I attached the video of the noise. My jeep is in neutral.

Throw out bearing. Probably not the transmission. One way or another you're pulling the transmission and taking a look. I'd order the Luk kit off Amazon that includes the throwout and pilot bearings.

Hopefully your skid plate bolts aren't stuck.

Okay that makes sense. Just got a quote for 800$ cash to put in new clutch kit and rear main seal if needed.

Thank you for the speedy response.

Rear main isn't accessed through the back of the engine. It's a two piece seal that requires the oil pan to be dropped.

Personally I'd do your own work.

But your Jeep, your rules.

I've done clutches on the side of the road.

I dropped my oil pan in a parking lot and beat the tick out of my engine (aka took out a dent and straighted up the girdle.)

You can do a lot on the side of a road...or trail...or anywhere...
