Best oil and oil filter?

Is there a thread on the best oil and filter for my wrangler?

Some info is 2.5l 1997 TJ.

What do you all prefer?

Been a loyal K&N man for the better part of 50 years. (I use the HP-1002 in my 2.4L - here's the one for yours: https://www.knfilters.com/oil-filters/jeep/wrangler/2.5l-l4-gas/1997)

I'm not so sure on this.

After watching the oil geek and then asking him a ton of questions I tried the new Valvoline Restore and Protect in one of my work trucks. It was burning oil pretty bad and after the first oil change the oil consumption is nearly gone. The inside is light brown now and no visible sludge visible through the filler hole. Will be monitoring for additional future uses.

I also put it in a push mower and riding mower which would smoke upon start up. Those issues are all gone.

Since I switched away from synthetic oil, all of my oil leaks have slowly resolved themselves-never had an oil "consumption" problem. I appreciate oil geek, but I know what actually works in my application, and I am the OO of my Jeep. Take it or leave it.

That is great to hear. This is why, to me, it is nearly futile to use the flavor of the day. Any oil is better than old oil but if it leaks it's not good oil for that motor. One of those trail and error situations until the one your motor is found.

I think that's only useful if you don't change your oil regularly.
You think there is such a thing as too much filtering? It doesn't cost more. I've never gone over 4k for an oil change when I dump my oil pan, the oil is still golden.
I live by the rule: Oil is cheap. Engines are expensive.

I searched the forum about this a while back. As others have said, there are many threads. I ended up following @Jerry Bransford. Fram Conventional 10W-30 and Fram Tough Guard TG-16 filter.

If you're interested, oil analysis is pretty cheap. Read about it here.

Thanks for the comment I was able to get the right filter today lol

Dear Admin, please lock this thread down, now... Over on the JL forum there is a thread that is 92 pages long, arguing about the best viscosity to use... ( Link, for those of you who have not had your RDA of stupid.)

I like coming here, because for the most part, that kind of mass mental fail does not happen here. And I'd like for it to stay that way. But if Admin continues to let this thread unroll, nothing good will come of it, I promise you.

No way! This forum's tolerance for open discussion on a vast array of topics without admin dramatics is a major plus. Argue...er... Discuss onwards!

And 0W20 full synthetic once a year and fram filter for the milage.

😁

This is a discussion form. This is where people....discuss things. In this thread, the topic is oil and filter. It's a popular topic. People like to talk about it......because this is a discussion forum where people....discuss things.

Anyways lemme get my probable last message in.....or not but here's what i use due to the mods i have....and welp it makes me feel better putting in some high zinc dino juice into my slightly hot-rodded 4.0 :D As well It sees its oil being changed every 3k miles
10w30 Valvoline Vr1 and when i cant, some 10w30 Rotella T6 and a wix 51515

And now we wait for our experts 😆

I run Supertech 5W30 full synthetic high mileage oil and usually a Wix filter. Working great for me. Change between 3k and 5k.

That’s a loaded questions. That like asking a fat guy what’s the best kind of food to eat. Haha. No offense.

I read someone on here say the simplest and best answer…doesn’t matter, just do it religiously, as we as all the other fluids.

Want to ruin a jeep? Skip your fluid changes.

Wanna ruin any vehicle for that matter. My daughters ‘06 crv 165k ish miles burns a quart every 1500-2000k. That’s been since 75-80k. Keep em full and clean and y’all know that 4.0 will last and last.

once a year

Why once a year? Never seen a “ use by date” on the label? Does it spoil faster in hot climate. Does it last longer in cold climates? My Ram oil was a year in November and when I check it I don’t see any mold. Only 4000 miles since the last change. 😂

An engine that sits a lot will develop some condensation inside the engine. Condensation mixed with byproducts of combustion will create a mild acid. Most oil experts generally recommend an oil change interval at a certain mileage OR yearly whichever comes first. I change by miles or once a year if I don't hit the mileage target on my vehicles and equipment. That's what I do because people who know far more than me about oil recommend that. But, do whatever makes you happy.

I follow the experts opinions usually. It’s been cold and I have a pacbrake relocation kit to install when the opportunity comes. So I’m actually fishing for opinions as to why the one year mark is going to destroy my engine. Rams have oil issues already and changing the oil in a Ram is difficult. I also keep all my vehicles gas tanks full due to condensation buildup.

Quaker State All Mileage Conventional 10W30 and 10W40 with a Bosch or a Purolator filter which both came out good in a test I read. BTW until I saw this thread I didn't even know Fram sold oil, let alone conventional oil. Another choice for our engines for those who run conventional oils to keep leaks in check.
