As the title mentions I'm looking for the best winch for under $700. Synthetic rope is required.

I have an entry-level Warn , I think it was 500-550, does good but a little slow .

Jerry's post makes good sense.

I know this may sound crazy , but from what I have seen of disassembled winches , they sure could benefit from lubrication points...if it didn't get into the wrong places.

I agree the Warn M8000 is a hell of a good winch. This is a M8000 mounted on my 95 YJ that my son now has and is still working. It was originally mounted on my Toyota P/U back in the late 80's. It was removed when I sold the Toyota in the mid 90's and put on a shelf, where it sat until I bought the YJ back around 2005. The steel cable has now been replaced for Syn. Rope.

Warn M8000 (current Amazon price $629) and sell the wire rope and replace with synthetic or M8000-S (currently $899 on Amazon but $829 in late June - track prices with camelcamelcamel.com.)
