Just bought a new cylinder head for my 4.0. Went through Rockauto and bought it brand new from the vendor Cylinder Head Express? Might have been a bad idea but haven't heard anything negative about them. Anyways, I got my head today in the mail. Everything looks good but I am worried about whatever this is: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1b9QdaQHjPWtaWHWduwL3isEWdFSTeUXx/view?usp=sharing

What is that and why does it look so irregularly shaped? Will this cause issues? Here is a picture of the entire head: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12IMKQcMFfBrmT9aeCqqF6D3MY2Omr2zj/view?usp=sharing

I also find it interesting Clearwater says the same head works for every year of TJ...

Looks like a casting issue. But, doesn't appear it will cause any problems based on your pics. I can't tell for sure. I'd inspect it closely and if all looks well, I'd run it.

Yup looks like clearwater's head doesn't have it. Probably is a casting issue on mine like another comment said but I'm not sure if it'll cause an issue?

In the immortal words of Clint Eastwood...do you feel lucky punk...

So we can see something different. We don't know if it's different, wrong or different it doesn't matter.

You can't call Rock Auto.

See if you can call the company that makes the head and get their opinion. Maybe something in writing saying even if you install it they'll honor some warranty.

So we are talking about where the pushrod comes up and through, is it just those two locations? Is there more….Not proficient here but I am thinking really how much room does a push rod need … dry fit my help with the analysis. and if it is just the two spots do I have a rotary tool that I could use to grind out some more room. Back up options after I called the company to see if they have concerns on the casting.

Guys I wasn't paying enough attention. Whoever brought up the threaded holes is correct. There are threaded holes on the other side, I don't think this is an issue so I'm going to throw it on.

That was me. But still no detailed pic of the threaded holes. Good luck.

Yup sorry wasn't thinking at all, been a sleep deprived past few days I was looking for threads were the pushrods went through last night. I already dropped the head off this morning with the mechanic and that's when I noticed it. Don't think it's a problem. We will see.

New cylinder head was installed a few days ago. I've already driven the Jeep 800 miles. So far everything is good. Only surprise was that there is an extra hole near the back of the head for a second temp sending unit? I just had my mechanic plug it with a bolt wrapped in Teflon. I'll keep updating.
