Brake drum doesn't fit after replacing shoes: what did I do wrong?

I'm probably going to jack up the rear end and try to adjust everything again later today. I have to replace the sway bar end link bushings once they arrive from Amazon so I'll have to jack it up anyways. The adjuster screws were lubed up by me.

I might try the driving backwards and hitting the brake first though. I really would like to not get into the drums again. Such a pain in the ass.

It has been posted by me more than a few times but here goes again.

Back off the threaded adjuster under the tub until there is slack in the cables.
Rear axle on stands, trans or t-case in neutral.
Pull plug in backing plate and turn the star wheel until you feel some drag turning the tire. Repeat for the other side.
Go back to cable adjuster, tighten it until the cable doesn't move more than 1/8" out of the housing when you pull down on the adjuster.
Go for a short drive around the block or similar, hold button in on parking brake lever and apply and release it several times while the vehicle is moving slowly to bed the shoes into the drum a bit and knock off the high spots.

Back to the stands and repeat the adjustment again. When done, parking brake will hold very well, and set hard about 3 clicks up from the bottom.

Is it the same for the disk brake (in-hat) setup?
Should the cable adjuster be loosened before replacing the parking shoes?

Yes, but it is not as critical since the function of the parking brake doesn't affect the service brake.
