Can I save this transmission?

A couple coats of Rustoleum self-etching primer, and then an entire can of Rustoleum blue metallic. I’ll probably clear coat it too, just cuz. I have down time while parts are soaking & im awaiting deliveries.

I painted over the shift seal & other fittings to keep the bores clean, I’ll take them out & strip them back down, maybe hit them with gloss black to make everything really pop. Completely unnecessary but yolo.

Makes me want to pull my trans just to paint it. Looks amazing!

Also did not realize you were so close to me, you might see me driving around with no top once this bipolar weather calms down.

Where are you at?

Honestly this summer has been kinda chill by comparison. I haven't put the frameless top on mine, just gone with the Alien sunshade. It lets more sun in but it also lets more heat out. Last summer it was often "too hot" to even drive the jeep during the daytime....not that I didn't, I just would be really sweaty when I got home. But I've been out and about during the day a bunch this summer and it's been much more pleasant.

I replied to your message on my transmission thread just a bit ago, but I am actually in Plano/Richardson area, not Dallas.

I have my frameless top on, but 90% of the time I have either the front flipped back or the windows out. Recently picked up a full length alien sunshade and have been loving it for when the front is flipped.

Also found that I can use the sunshade to store the windows when I am cruising with the top in its safari top configuration. Put the side windows in the front section with towels separating them from the shade, top, and each other. Then roll the rear window up and store it under the roll bar just before it starts to sweep downward towards the tub. This works pretty well and Ive been able to drive on PGBT at 65-70 without donating my rear window to the NTTA.

Well, she has opted to have the drum machined. So now I have to disassemble it and take it to the machine shop and hope my "buddy" I used last time can work me in on short notice again. This time I'll show up with the case of beer ahead of time. Last time he did it while I waited, if that's an option this time I'm going to see if I can film it.

And now another friend wants me to rebuild his 46RE. I watched a video, the front half is basically identical to a 32RH, with the overdrive stuff being in the tailhousing, but nothing tricky in there either. But the rebuild kits are between $500-$1000.

If he's serious, I'll probably do it, but I'm not accepting any more boxes of parts unless there is also a big fat envelope of cash in the box.

How much material is removed when the drum gets machined? Does the band simply get tightened afterwards?

Well on this one we're going to be doing more than just taking off a couple thou. But yes, the band is flexible enough that it will wrap pretty much anything that's round and has a larger circumference than the length of the band. We're plenty good in this case. And the drum itself is pretty thick so there's really no danger here.

Someday, you might actually get this thing off your bench! ;) :D

Not soon enough. I still have to open up the transfer case. I've probably already vented about it, but I didn't really sign up to rebuild a t-case. And while it should be simpler, it's pretty likely i'm going to run into rusted bearings and crap that evaporust isn't going to resolve. So it's going to be more expense for her, that she isn't counting on. It's a YJ case with the vacuum switch. Macho sent me a bunch of info on YJ stuff; it might be cheaper/easier to just get a new t-case and drop in the vacuum switch, if it is indeed that simple.

Is this going into a yj or cj? I just put a spring into the front axle vacuum disconnect that will hold the shift fork in the engaged postion on a friends 89 yj. It had many vacuum leaks keeping it from running right. An hei/autolite 2100 conversion later and it only needs vacuum to the brake booster and distributor!

dude said he took 0.015" off the drum, looking so much better now.

It's going into an 89 YJ. I put the thread here because this is where I live, but by and large this transmission is identical to the lockup 32RH we have in our rigs. But quirks like this are where I have to lean on yall. Oh, and I have no idea of the condition of the YJ this is going into. All I know is that it has sat in the rain and now the heat w/o a transmission since at least April. IDK if she has the cooler lines, the linkages, the mounting bolts, the nuts for the t-case... I'm predicting that I'm going to deliver a transmission but it will be months before she is able to actually test it.

I predict an 89 yj getting towed to your house.....😂

I need to re-read my original rebuild thread, but now that I think about it, when the same guy cleaned up my damaged front drum he ended up only charging me a case of beer. The way I had remembered it was that I expected to pay via card but he wanted cash and I didn't have enough so he asked that I offset it with a case of Budweiser. But upon further review, I doubt I had any cash on me. He offered to let me buy him lunch at BW's, but (a) I thought that might get weird and (b) I had a work call or something in an hour or so. So the case of beer was the compromise. So 3 years later the price remains the same.

Last time the guy said he ran a bastard file over it because he thought too smooth might have been a problem (I believe he was wrong about this, and may have been why my transmission ran hot until I put the cooler in). This time I can see the machine marks. It feels perfectly smooth, but not that shiny polished smooth that it probably should be. Probably. I would love to see what all these parts look like new.

Painted up the extension housing yesterday. I probably rushed this job but it turned out pretty good. NGL there are a couple places where I painted right over the dirt.

Aiming to have it fully assembled tonight.

ps. since it looks like a bass boat I photographed it near its natural habitat.

The painting over the dirt comment made me laugh. Seems like you would've been hooking her up without bothering painting it at all 😂
